Ploy – It's More Delayed Than You Realize

A superb exploration of peak-time house music at its finest...

The first time we encountered Bristol producer Ploy, he was producing globally inspired, off-kilter UK techno for some of the most esteemed underground electronic music labels, including Hessle Audio and Timedance. This partnership seemed perfect, as both integrate global sounds and UK influences, featuring wooden instrumental percussion, cyclic polyrhythms, and experimental ambient elements that provide reflective moments on the dancefloor rather than a purely upbeat vibe. On 'It's Later Than You Think' – the artist's most comprehensive project to date and his debut with Dekmantel – Ploy revisits his house origins with a front-left focused eight-track album that draws from 30 years of house music influences, encompassing everything from progressive to tech-house and garage to dub.

Prior to his emergence as Ploy, his initial releases showcased unconventional house explorations under his real name, Samuel Smith. We first observed what seemed to be a significant sonic transformation for the artist with last year's 'They Don't Love It Like We Do' EP, which served as a precursor to his latest work. If you've been following his Rinse FM residency, you might have noticed a shift in his influences. 'It's Later Than You Think' doesn’t follow a narrative-driven storyline; instead, it comprises eight straightforward tracks designed for DJs. However, for fans of braindance, there's no need for concern, as Ploy's creativity remains intact.

The percussive elements and basslines are still present, with much of the release's sonic signature reminiscent of the stripped down drum dubs that characterize NYC label Nervous Records, which also inspired fellow percussive genius Sister Zo in her contribution to the label's 'Full Tilt Carry Vol. 2' compilation. Just as Hessle Audio and Timedance were a perfect fit for Ploy's murky bass sound, Dekmantel proves to be equally suited for his house productions, with the musical style blending seamlessly into a vibe cultivated from years of shared experiences on the dancefloor – at Dekmantel Selectors and the closing of the renowned Amsterdam venue De School – without sacrificing its playful exuberance and global resonance, featuring off-key synths, catchy hooks, dubby atmospheres, and plenty of bongos.

Make no mistake; this is peak-time house music at its absolute finest.
