These New Puritans - Crooked Wing

      Reviewer: Tom Morgan

      Released: 23rd May 2025

      Label: Domino

The London studio of These New Puritans is located near a massive industrial waste processing facility and several Evangelical churches, which is reflected in the sound of the Southend-born brothers’ fifth studio album and their first of this decade: a blend of grime and grandeur, decay and brilliance. The album plays with these contrasting themes; for instance, ‘Bells’ is euphoric, showcasing the titular instruments beautifully, while ‘Industrial Love Song’ is ethereal, featuring a guest appearance by Caroline Polachek that enhances its emotional impact. Although most of the album shines with uplifting and soulful moments, there are notable tracks that delve into darker territory. ‘A Season In Hell’ combines foreboding church organs with intense percussion, and ‘Wild Fields’ introduces harsh elements into an otherwise catchy synth-pop tune reminiscent of Depeche Mode's middle era. This sophisticated and captivating comeback merges the creators’ appreciation for both industrial and religious styles while remaining approachable and emotionally resonant. Welcome back.
