Following what might be the most unexpected musical revival in 2017, Zamrock icons WITCH (also known as W.I.T.C.H / We Intend To Cause Havoc) have unveiled their new album ‘Sogolo’. This marks their second album of the century, showcasing the band’s return to form while also welcoming a new generation. The current lineup features the beloved frontman Jagari, seasoned keyboardist/composer Patrick Mwondela, and a newer, diverse group of musicians. It can be confirmed that this combination is fantastic and a delight to see live.

While attempts were made to record their previous album in their native country, this latest twelve-track release was more practically recorded in Europe. Laid down in Berlin during a 10-day break in the band’s 2024 tour, ‘Sogolo’ is a more optimistic record—keen to highlight the band's synergy rather than merely reminisce. Some fans might yearn for the charming DIY sounds reminiscent of recordings from 50 years ago, but this is WITCH as we know them in 2025.

For those in search of their signature fuzzy, swampy sounds, there’s still much to savor. The opener ‘Kamusale’ features Jagari drawing from a Bemba children’s game song, passionately singing over a dark, pulsating beat. It embodies the essence of WITCH: funky, slightly cheeky, and incredibly danceable. The lead single ‘Queenless King’ also reflects the band’s origins, with Jagari—now a mischievous elder—advising the youth against marrying individuals with bad intentions. With a wonderfully spacey synth solo from Mwondela added in, it’s sure to entertain.

The lively ‘Bang, Bang’ brings pure audible joy. Its message is straightforward, as Jagari encourages listeners to move and join him in the mosh pit for three minutes. Additionally, ‘Nadi’ and ‘Nibani’ allow the band to explore more contemporary Afro-rock and pop influences, showcasing the musical talents of the younger members. A delightful surprise is the Mwondela-composed reggae/gospel track ‘Totally Devoted’. In simple terms, it’s the type of African-inspired song Damon Albarn has been attempting to create for the last 25 years—and it would fit seamlessly on a Gorillaz album. Catchy, melancholic, and bursting with brilliant keyboard work. A true standout.

Overall, ‘Sogolo’ feels less cohesive compared to 2023’s ‘Zango’, but it is a bolder, more dynamic, and progressive album. WITCH sounds re-energized and focused on the future—ready to bring people together under their banner of inclusivity, love, and dancing joyfully. It’s no surprise they’ve been invited to perform at Glastonbury this year.
