A stunning miniature guitar...

Fingerstyle guitarist Hayden Pedigo appeared to tap into something unique with his 2023 album ‘The Happiest Times I Ever Ignored’, which transformed into an unexpected but well-earned success story. Blending various influences – the Takoma style of John Fahey, elements of Americana – with his distinctive instrumental approach, it provided captivating, meditative listening. Expanding his artistic range further, ‘I’ll Be Waving As You Drive Away’ is a lovely, at times surreal, but consistently engaging follow-up.
Seemingly conceived during a stay at a secluded ranch in Wyoming, the seven-track album was ultimately shaped at a studio in Ojai with Scott Hirsch. The results convey a sense of purpose – nothing feels unnecessary, while the songwriting allows Hayden to explore new territories.
‘Long Pond Lily’ starts with acoustic reflections, the experimental tunings creating space with every note; a layered electric guitar then evokes imagery of 50s pop, the rich arrangement delivering a compelling quality. ‘All The Way Across’ combines Hayden’s acoustic skills with a nuanced sound, delicate piano notes floating in the background. ‘Smoked’ introduces subtle effects to his guitar, paired with synth elements reminiscent of an Angelo Badalamenti score.
‘Houndstooth’ opens with a stripped-back acoustic approach before powerful, melancholic strings make their entrance. ‘Hermes’ is splendid, while the evocative brief piece ‘Small Torch’ delights in musicality. The title track serves as a conclusion – seemingly alluding to a particularly emotional scene from Little House On The Prairie, the intricate structure navigates through highs and lows of emotion.
Succinct in just under 30 minutes, ‘I’ll Be Waving As You Drive Away’ leaves a significant impression. Melodically enchanting, there’s much to discover here upon multiple listens. It’s an album worth spending time with; you’ll hesitate to say goodbye to Hayden Pedigo when it finishes.
