Introducing… Jahnah Camille

"If someone encourages you to fit in, they're offering poor guidance; you'll likely achieve more by following your own instincts." What was the first song or album you purchased with your own money, and what motivated that choice? It was likely ‘The Electric Lady’ by Janelle Monáe – I still have a great appreciation for that album. It's a wonderfully genre-blending concept album and marks the final instance of her embodying her robot persona. Her vocals are incredible, and it also introduced me to Solange, who I now admire greatly (there was a feature by Prince on it, but that's been removed from streaming). I vividly recall it as an amazing source of uniqueness during my childhood, as I listened to the CD constantly. I would really love to revisit it now that I'm older; I imagine I'd gain much more from it.

You've just finished a tour with Blondshell and also supported the beloved Soccer Mommy. What were those experiences like – were there any particular shows or moments that stood out? And what can audiences expect from a Jahnah Camille live performance? I mainly remember being the most excited person in the room at all times, with my older music peers telling me I have every reason to be; I'm really happy to have accomplished all of this from my hometown. I think audiences should go into my shows with no expectations. I see them as unique experiences, and I’m sure each crowd has a different vibe… but generally, I enjoy having fun and sharing a lot of laughter, which is nice to experience with an audience.

Share the best and worst advice you've received as a musician… The best advice I've received as a musician is “people over profit.” While I haven't been directly advised to conform, I have had band members leave because my music didn’t align with the local sound. So my takeaway is that if someone wants you to fit in, they're not giving you good advice; you'll likely progress further by being true to yourself. I've faced pressure to conform since moving to Alabama. I made a half-hearted attempt when I was younger, but once I reached about 14, I decided to reject that idea, which helped me appreciate my own perspective and succeed by being myself.

Lastly, DIY is coming over for dinner – what are you cooking? I'm preparing a miso red curry broth with udon noodles, edamame, roasted broccolini, and fish cakes. After being vegetarian for ten years, trying fish cakes was a turning point for me, so I've transitioned to pescatarianism, and I love it. Then, I might whip up a Vietnamese coffee-infused espresso martini and some lemon bars, since they’re my favorite dessert.
