"I've stopped taking myself so seriously and caring as much." The playful—and often "kinky"—quality of Luvcat’s lyrics lies at the heart of her narrative style. Though it could easily be seen as provocative in an increasingly conservative society, it reflects Sophie’s yearning for theatrical expression. Whether her lyrics are rooted in reality or imagination is left to the listener to interpret, but her songwriting is undeniably opulent and rich; while there are influences from mainstream artists like Lana Del Rey and Sabrina Carpenter, she also nods towards icons such as Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen. Rather than merely mimicking others, plunging into Luvcat’s realm of fantasy, as skillfully presented in ‘Vicious Delicious’, is a delight. Does she feel pressure to maintain this level of creativity? “I can only be a reflection of myself, and that’s how I live, so that’s inevitably what comes out of me,” she explains. “I’ve let go of taking myself too seriously and stopped worrying as much. I’ve gone through intense experiences, but they’ve liberated me in a way that makes me think, ‘Forget about being serious all the time’. We’re fortunate to be here, able to dance and share affection. Let’s celebrate this in our music!”
As the characters and their stories weave through the album, there’s also a strong sense of place present in ‘Vicious Delicious’; whether it’s Liverpool, London, or Paris. Some references are clearer than others, with mentions of Liverpool’s Kazimier Garden and the Soho restaurant Brasserie Zedel, but it’s the ambiance they create that truly anchors the album in its own universe. “I despise that advice songwriters receive, ‘Be generic so you’re relatable’,” Sophie asserts. “I view that as nonsense; I want to take listeners to a specific place, even if it’s a random spot in Ohio I’ve never visited. It feels disingenuous not to express the exact context of my feelings or experiences while writing those stories. Liverpool, London, and Paris represent the trio of cities where all the narratives unfolded.”
Having crafted her own artistic universe, one might think Luvcat is satisfied to remain there for a while, but she’s always eager to keep her audience on their toes. “I have plenty of songs within me, plus a few surprises up my sleeve in the meantime, as I never want to repeat myself,” she shares with a playful half-wink. “I aim to keep it unpredictable. I want to astonish those who have supported me from the start.” ‘Vicious Delicious’ will be released on October 31st via AWAL.
