Set Aside Your Ego: CLASH Engages with Sienna Spiro

Sienna Spiro has been captivating audiences for over two years with her stunning vocals, characterized by a raspy, soulful quality that imbues her jazzy pop genre with a vintage feel. Drawing inspiration from legends like Sinatra and Aretha, it feels like a moment of cosmic significance when we sit down with the London-born artist to discuss her latest single and her busiest year to date.

Sienna launched her career in a way that resonates with today's generation of artists. In an impressive feat, she transitioned from TikTok covers to headlining shows and festival appearances, culminating in her first EP 'Sink Now, Swim Later' within just a year. To illustrate the success of this rare talent from London, Sienna has headlined The Tabernacle, introduced her new GAP campaign, and announced her appearance on Jools Holland's show. This all followed her support of Teddy Swims on the I Tried Everything But Therapy tour, along with her own solo performances. All signs indicate a new phase of potential global influence and possibly a debut album.

How have your collaborations and the people you've worked with this past year influenced your songwriting and music creation process?

I believe that in any collaboration, having no ego is crucial, as I think ego stifles creativity. When you arrive at a studio or a space to create with someone, it's important to set aside your ego and allow for a unique creative process.

You’ve mentioned finding it hard to let people in, yet in music, you reveal your most vulnerable side, allowing others to see you from a different perspective.

The best musicians and songwriters can navigate this dynamic. I think you need a bit of ego to believe you can pursue music as a career, but the truly great ones know when to step back, acknowledge their mistakes, and embrace new ideas.

Your music often feels timeless, suggesting you might one day write a Bond theme or collaborate with iconic artists. How do you maintain that timeless quality in the studio?

In the age of social media, I find it challenging to navigate modern music. Content tends to be in short, quick bursts, which reflects people's shorter attention spans.

To create something timeless, you have to strip it back and ensure that everything is deliberate. When you’re creating, you can’t think too far ahead; it’s essential that what you make feels authentic to you.

When we spoke in July 2024, you had just released ‘Maybe’, which has now exceeded 76 million streams on Spotify. What do you believe resonated with your audience in those early stages of your career?

I actually disliked ‘Maybe’ before its release. I shared the chorus out of spontaneity, as I was posting anything I had written at the time. Now, it’s empowering to see others singing it. I’m incredibly grateful for how others have helped me appreciate that song and taught me about myself. During my recent tours, I've witnessed how people respond to it.

Last year, you mentioned that ‘Need Me’ was your favorite song to perform. Has that changed since then?

I enjoy performing the unreleased tracks because they allow me to express myself more physically, but my new favorite is ‘Die On This Hill’. It’s incredibly cathartic; my entire body is engaged when I sing it, and it feels like everything bursts forth with emotion.
