Halsey has released a statement in defense of Chappell Roan’s recent remarks advocating for increased rights for emerging artists.
Chappell Roan had a significant night at the Grammy awards and chose to use her platform thoughtfully. While delivering a prepared speech from the stage, she called on record labels to make proper investments in younger talent, ensuring they receive a livable wage and guaranteed health care.
She stated: “Since I was signed at a young age, as a minor, when I was dropped, I had no job experience, and like many others, struggled to find work during the pandemic, leaving me unable to afford health insurance.”
“It was incredibly disheartening to be so dedicated to my art while feeling betrayed by the system and dehumanized due to a lack of health care. If my label had prioritized the health of its artists, I could have received care from the company to which I committed everything.”
“Therefore, record labels must view their artists as valuable employees, providing them with a livable wage, health insurance, and necessary protections. Labels, we support you, but do you support us? Thank you.”
This statement ignited significant discussion within the music industry, leading to a response from former major label executive Jeff Rabhan in the Hollywood Reporter.
The article challenged many of Chappell Roan’s assertions, but it also drew criticism from another pop star, Halsey.
In an Instagram Stories post, Halsey expressed her hope that the Hollywood Reporter feels "embarrassed" for publishing what she called a “personal attack.”
Addressing the article, Halsey noted: “If you wish to profit from someone else's art, that artist should have the fundamental means to live comfortably enough to create that art.”
Supporting Chappell Roan’s demand for a fair, livable wage for all artists, Halsey concluded her remarks by labeling the Hollywood Reporter’s article as “boot licking behavior.”
