Following the release of ‘Pass The Salt’ last month, where Joy Crookes collaborated with Vince Staples, the artist has unveiled another new track, this time enlisting fellow Londoner Kano for the academically titled ‘Mathematics’. “I wrote ‘Mathematics’ while I was dating a French guy who didn't grasp that what was happening between us wasn’t hieroglyphics; we were simply falling in love, and then he attempted to friend-zone me,” Joy explains about the song. “As I connect more with this song and perform it more, I've realized it's somewhat an angry piece about how easily I can love and the frustration that it can't be returned. It's wonderful when a song serves as a remedy for the various challenges life throws at us. Kano came to listen to the track with Blue May and I, and then secretly recorded his verse for ‘Mathematics’ when I had initially asked him to contribute to another song. He was drawn to ‘Mathematics’ and dropped into the studio without us, sending over a verse. It was incredibly moving to see how inspired he was to do this, almost like a little gift for this track. Thanks, Kano; it's truly special to hear you write about love.” Joy released her debut album ‘Skin’ in 2021, which climbed to Number Five on the UK album chart. The album was shortlisted for the 2022 Mercury Prize. Check out the video for ‘Mathematics’ below.
Her fourth album will be released later this month.
