From Somerset to the Globe: Directed by Creative Director Martine Rose, this short film captures the journey, cultural significance, and worldwide influence of Clarks over the past two centuries.
Yasiin Bey narrates the new documentary celebrating 200 years of Clarks, tracing the brand's origins from a small workshop in Street, Somerset, where brothers Cyrus and James Clark created slippers from leftover sheepskin.
The film chronicles the progression of Clarks, from its original slippers to the Desert boot designed by Nathan Clark in 1950, leading up to the present day. As it explores the brand’s narrative, Yasiin Bey, Martine Rose, and various prominent figures in music and footwear examine Clarks' cultural imprint globally.
The Wallabee, launched in 1967, solidified Clarks’ status in music, becoming a staple in the Jamaican ska and reggae movements of the 1970s and the US hip-hop culture in the 1980s.
Tim Crumplin, the archivist at the Shoemakers Museum, reflects on Clarks' significant legacy: “In 1825, Somerset was somewhat isolated from the rest of the country, requiring self-reliance and prompting the Clark family to take a different approach.”
Renowned British musician Liam Gallagher, who is preparing to release his second collaboration with Clarks later this year, shares his personal connection with the brand in the documentary: “My earliest memories of Clarks are probably from school... everyone was wearing them, they were incredibly popular... I wore Clarks throughout the ‘90s, and I have countless memories... for me, no other brand compares... I find it hard to consider alternatives... Clarks have always been reliable.”
Martine Rose, the British-Jamaican designer and Clarks' creative director, states: “Whenever a child gets their first pair of shoes, Clarks is where you go, to ensure you have the correct width, depth, and size for their little feet.”
More than 20 prominent individuals from music, fashion, and the Clarks family reflect on 200 years of history with Clarks, while envisioning what lies ahead.
