As a vocalist, Bryan Ferry stands out with few equals – an unmistakable King Of Cool, he propelled Roxy Music to chart-topping success, helping to reshape pop culture. However, his solo career is largely characterized by a passion for interpretation, allowing him to express his lasting affection for soul and jazz, while also paying homage to Bob Dylan.
Ferry began his solo journey with a unique rendition of Bob Dylan’s ‘A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall’, giving it a fresh perspective through a new arrangement. Dylan’s music became a significant reference point for him, highlighted by the outstanding 2007 album ‘Dylanesque’.
In a conversation with CLASH in 2024, Bryan Ferry shared: “I wasn’t deeply engaged with Dylan at that time, but I found his songs really intriguing. He was distinct from all the other musicians I appreciated back then, who were predominantly Black American artists, with a few Europeans like Piaf thrown in. The eccentrics.”
“I later found myself revisiting Dylan when I needed inspiration between my own songwriting. His great songs and words are ones that singers enjoy performing. Most of his work is presented in a straightforward manner – just guitar and vocals – which offers plenty of opportunity to do something unique. Since I wasn’t a devoted fan, I could approach it with enthusiasm and start playing the keys. We discovered a way to make it very much my own.”
