Doves – Constellations for the Lonely

Doves' music has proven to be timeless. Today, they are celebrated as iconic creators of catchy, melancholic melodies. Their distinct sound continues to enchant, even 25 years after the release of their influential 2000 debut, 'Lost Souls'. Since then, the Manchester trio—composed of Jimi Goodwin and brothers Jez and Andy Williams—has occupied a unique spot in the British indie scene. While they may not have been the poster children for '00s indie, they have nonetheless achieved three number 1 albums and a plethora of radio-friendly tracks.

After nearly a decade-long hiatus following 2009's 'Kingdom of Rust', Doves made a comeback in 2020 with the highly praised 'The Universal Want'. The subsequent five years have been anything but easy. Canceled tours due to frontman Jimi Goodwin's mental health issues and personal challenges nearly jeopardized the band’s survival. However, they have managed to endure and share their story. The results of this challenging period can now be heard in 'Constellations For the Lonely': a poignant and raw alt-rock sixth album that resonates with strong emotional depth and sonic exploration.

Despite the surrounding turmoil, the music itself shines through. 'Renegade' was the first glimpse of the new album, released in November, and it sets a vulnerable tone. Drawing inspiration from Blade Runner, it depicts a dystopian vision using imagery of a futuristic Manchester, creating an intense opening atmosphere. A distorted single piano note unnervingly drives the song, while Jimi's voice is both raw and reflective of darker experiences: “And if you could only see what I’ve seen…with your eyes / Then you’ll know that everything expires.” The introduction is bleak, anthemic, and truly awe-inspiring.

Next comes 'Cold Dreaming', aptly described as a “slow burner.” Jez and Andy share vocal duties (which they will continue to do on their upcoming tour without Jimi) in a psychedelic-soul infused track that delves into themes of anxiety and forgiveness through a cinematic Northern Soul lens. This shift works well, though it carries a colder (and more nasally) tone than what we’re used to, requiring a few listens to fully appreciate.

As we reach the midpoint, a winding psych-rock essence leaves the listener in suspense. The ethereal guitar melodies on 'Strange Weather' lift us into the ether, eventually sending the song into orbit (the synth keys evoke memories of ‘Lonerism’-era Tame Impala). This sound continues into the brilliant 'A Drop In The Ocean', where a funky riff and driving percussion create a dizzying high point.

Remarkably, Doves sustain the quality of the first half into the latter. A rich blend of swirling strings, mandolins, and Scott Walker-inspired 60s atmospherics complement the passionate balladry found in 'Last Year’s Man'. Simultaneously, 'Stupid Schemes' illuminates with a bright undertone; lively guitars counter Jimi’s weary lyrics (“be careful of their stupid schemes, be careful of their liberties…”).

This uplifting tone continues with the folk-rock essence of 'Saint Teresa'—a gorgeous track brimming with religious imagery and a stirring chorus. To conclude, 'Southern Bell' evokes echoes of early Fleet Foxes' autumnal folk, introducing a mid-song twist where Jimi shines in his vocal farewell filled with hopeful lyrics (“you’ll never be alone again/Now you’re here with me my friend”).

'Constellations for the Lonely' is a complex and masterful album from a band at the peak of their artistry. It remains a familiar sound for long-time fans while still venturing into new territory. Doves have navigated personal struggles over the years and have utilized this sixth album as a form of catharsis. In doing so, they have produced not only one of their finest albums but also one of the year's best.
