Sheffield-based four-piece NAVY is undoubtedly a rising talent. This youthful band – featuring Oliver Graham on vocals, George Craft on guitar, Matthew Jones on bass, and Kyle Marriot on drums – showcases impressive skill and captivating stage presence, promising a bright future ahead. With their latest single, “No Man’s Land,” these four musicians expand upon the sound they are beginning to establish as their own. It's a blend of classic rock infused with a sultry, addictive alternative vibe.
That said, they have adopted a darker tone overall, presenting a deeply personal and honest exploration of fear and anxiety with this new track. Serving as the first single from their forthcoming debut EP, “No Man’s Land” offers an unfiltered look at panic and anxiety attacks. The song is steeped in classic grunge and rock influences – reminiscent of a mix between Nirvana and The Stone Roses. With a solid foundation provided by Jones’ steady bass line and Marriot’s well-timed drums, NAVY orchestrates the perfect backdrop for the true highlight of the song: Craft’s captivating guitar work, which elevates the track to new heights.
Craft’s guitar riffs are undeniably rich and compelling. They drive the song towards an exhilarating release of the built-up tension, creating a dialogue between the instrumentation and the lyrics, complemented by the feedback as the song concludes – there’s something inherently satisfying about “No Man’s Land.” One might even call it transcendent, as the song ebbs and flows in a way that showcases the intentionality of each component. By the end, there’s a sense of reluctant resolution to the narrative crafted by the combination of instruments and lyrics.
In terms of vocals, Graham conveys them with a rawness that perfectly aligns with the lyrics. He allows his emotions to manifest through the lyrics without overproduction or striving for perfection. This authenticity adds a rare integrity to the song, enhancing its captivating storyline. As he sings, or rather pleads, “Eleanor / Call my name / Call my name,” revealing a struggle for relief through slight pitch fluctuations, the track becomes increasingly representative of a panic attack.
The lyrics articulate a desire for visible scars that showcase personal battles while passively noting, “you’ll be fine take another pill.” The internal conflict NAVY portrays is profoundly relatable; from the longing for tangible evidence of hardship to the vivid emotions captured throughout the track.
As the initial glimpse of their upcoming project, “No Man’s Land” serves as an anthem of internal struggle and resilience. It effectively creates a familiar atmosphere that is both commanding and humble. For a topic that can be challenging to articulate without losing its essence, NAVY has excelled.
“No Man’s Land” is available now, with the band’s debut EP expected to follow shortly after.
