An outstanding pop entry from the trio...

HAIM is consistently reliable when it comes to delivering a catchy pop anthem that ushers them into a new phase. ‘Relationships’ certainly fits that bill. Within just 30 seconds, a rush of hooks unfolds beautifully, accompanied by ‘90s funk and vibrant jazz pop elements. This release ends a surprisingly long period of silence for the group, despite their support role for Taylor Swift during The Eras tour in 2023 and a contribution to the Barbie movie soundtrack. Remarkably, it took them seven years to perfect ‘Relationships,’ indicating that the extensive time spent refining the track has evidently paid off.
Musically, it retains elements from their exceptional album ‘Women In Music Pt. III’ released in 2020. The blend of vintage, analogue tones with modern, warped sounds hints at a subtle evolution rather than a complete overhaul. Whether this serves as a distraction remains to be seen. The production remains crystal clear; Este’s bass flows smoothly, serene keyboards offer a melancholic shine, and the drum track is irresistibly engaging and energetic.
From a lyrical standpoint, the song appears to turn the feelings expressed in the ‘Something To Tell You’ lead single ‘Want You Back’ on their head. Instead of yearning for a past relationship that ended prematurely, Danielle shares her thoughts on one she is eager to escape: “I hear a voice in my head / And it keeps asking, ‘Why am I in this relationship?’ / Baby, how can I explain / When an innocent mistake / Turns into seventeen days?” While ‘The Wire’ tackled similar themes, it did so in a more playful tone. What sets this apart is the subtle yet noticeable hint of sadness, particularly in the verses, resulting in a more emotionally layered piece than initial listens may suggest.
Nearly 12 years since ‘Days Are Gone,’ Danielle, Este, and Alana's talent for crafting shiny pop hooks remains undiminished. If HAIM is indeed entering their prime, ‘Relationships’ is a remarkable way to debut this phase.
