CHAMELON LIME WHOOPIEPIE Picks: 7 J-Pop Artists to Keep an Eye On

CHAMELEON LIME WHOOPIEPIE, the J-pop powerhouse led by Chi, is set to release their upcoming album ‘Whoop It Up’ with the new single ‘I Know,’ featuring MadeinTYO. This track showcases CLWP’s vibrant universe, delving into the darker sides of human behavior through a whimsical and hyper-pop lens.

Chi discusses the collaboration that began when MadeinTYO reached out through social media: “He contacted us on Instagram, and we quickly created the song – it’s amazing that we finally get to share it with everyone!”

Known for their extraordinary theatrical shows, CHAMELEON LIME WHOOPIEPIE will perform at The Great Escape Festival in Brighton on May 15th. As the release of ‘Whoop It Up’ approaches, Chi introduces us to seven J-pop acts we should be aware of.

      Chara – 70%-夕暮れのう

Once you hear it, you instantly recognize Chara – her voice and style are distinctive. Her unique expression in Japanese and the way her words resonate musically is simply remarkable. The looping intro is fantastic, and when her smooth voice enters, it's impossible not to be enchanted.

テークエム – Maji De Naeru Ze

Take-M is such an underrated artist in Japan. I adore the catchy pop flow of this song, which emerges from a subtle track addressing societal beliefs. I was thoroughly impressed by how Take-M managed to convey his thoughts succinctly and stylishly in Japanese!

      奥田民生 – イージュー★ライダー

Even though this song was released before my time, some of the lyrics truly resonate with me. It makes me feel that regardless of the era, people’s thoughts and feelings remain constant – giving me a sense of both resignation and hope simultaneously.

      The Birthday – LOVE ROCKETS

This track is the opening theme for the Slam Dunk movie, which is one of my all-time favorite anime. More than that, it truly encapsulates the essence of Japanese rock! I don’t typically listen to rock, but this song is simply too cool to overlook. Yusuke Chiba’s vocals are filled with raw energy and reflect his life philosophy; it's impossible not to be impressed. In one word: incredible.

      UA – 甘い運命

I adore the ‘90s J-Pop vibe of this song. She uses Japanese beautifully. There’s an excellent contrast within the track; it feels fresh and light, while her vocals carry a rich, sultry, and effortlessly cool quality.

      星野源 – さらしもの (feat. PUNPEE)

I enjoy how the catchy beat makes you want to dance, complemented by the clever lyrics that add a playful element. Hoshino Gen and PUNPEE bring out the best in one another, which made me truly appreciate the greatness of J-pop.

      RIP SLYME – One

This is one of the Japanese rap tracks I listen to the most. RIP SLYME is among my favorite Japanese rap groups, and last year, we featured their former member PES on our single ‘REACH’. The fact that they were pioneers of old-school hip-hop in Japan back in the 2000s is just so impressive.
