A new Spring has arrived, bringing fresh music from the ever-evolving Billie Marten.

“Feeling,” the second single from her upcoming album Dog Eared (set to drop on July 18th through Fiction Records), is finally here, and it is a remarkable achievement.

In the summer of 2024, Marten, along with a talented group of musicians, collaborated with New York-based producer Phil Weinrobe (renowned for his work with Adrianne Lenker) to record Dog Eared. The musicians performed cohesively during these sessions, gathered in a circle with no studio walls or equipment to separate them—only their instruments. The outcome is a pure demonstration of unfiltered creative expression and energy.

“This record embodies what music should be—a creative dialogue among open-minded musicians, all moving in the same direction, which is unmistakably toward the heart of Billie’s incredible songs,” Weinrobe expresses with enthusiasm.

He adds, “Yes, the record was captured live. Yes, Billie delivered the lead vocals as it happened. Yes, we were clustered together in a circle—no headphones, no barriers, no playback, nothing dividing us from one another, and nothing segregating the performers from their art. But this isn’t the reason why this album stands as a monument. It’s a monument because every day, Billie entered the studio and sang these magnificent melodies and beautiful lyrics without any concerns or desires to control the art. She was the art itself. Everyone around her elevated her, and in turn, she lifted the music to heights that we’re all fortunate enough to experience repeatedly.”

Like a feather-light paperback blowing open in the breeze, Billie Marten has turned a fresh page. In “Feeling,” we see her at her most genuine. It’s the most in love and self-assured she has ever sounded. One can almost hear her blushing, as if she is smiling throughout the record.

With swirling horns and a smooth blend of pianos and steel guitars, “Feeling” exudes a dreamy tenderness that envelops you, reminiscent of golden sunlight filtering through your bedroom window in the morning. This is one of Billie’s talents: crafting songs that feel like pieces of home—fragments you can carry with you wherever you go.

      Drawing roads into the sand

      Falling deep into your hands

      Barely grown enough to stand

      And looking up at you

      And you look so good

      And you look so clean

      I am on my way

      I am in between feeling

      – “Feeling,” Billie Marten

“I’ve realized that I have a particularly vivid long-term memory,” Marten explains. “I can easily recall specific sensory memories starting from when I was two. One of these is tracing roads in my grandmother’s patterned carpet for my dad’s old toy cars from the 1950s and 60s. I used to outline designs in everything: from the fabric seats at the dentist to carpets, wallpaper, and walls, even the raindrops on car windows. Everything had a pattern waiting to be noticed.”

Marten’s fascination with the seemingly mundane, combined with her keen observational skills and social commentary, defines her unique writing style.

With “Feeling,” she fully embraces her strengths, allowing minimal, if anything, to obstruct her from the music. The same holds true for the skilled musicians accompanying her.

“‘Feeling’ is truly ignited by Núria Graham’s guitar part, which you hear from the very beginning,” Marten shares. “It energizes the album and establishes a strong rhythmic base. This is an album centered on rhythm.”

We are, oh, so lightly here

      Softer than a rabbit ear

      Watch me as I disappear

      Into the great unknown

      – “Feeling,” Billie Marten

Billie Marten has found a soft landing amidst the chaos of life. She has discovered love—possibly with someone, perhaps within herself, or with life itself. Maybe with all of the above. And you can hear that soaring through “Feeling” and “Crown” (the first single, released October 11, 2024).

Love is an elusive emotion. It’s a topic every poet writes about, every singer sings about, and every person contemplates in their quest to understand, preserve, or lament it. But when we really examine it, love is quite simple, isn’t it? It requires only one thing from us: to show up as we are, so it can meet us where we are.

Likewise, Billie Marten’s “Feeling” meets us right where we are—whether we
