How do you convey just how much you love someone?
With music, sweet music: James Bay’s latest single embodies pure love and light. Featuring the unique talents of Jon Batiste, “Sunshine in the Room” is an uplifting love song that feels like it’s sung from cloud nine. For Bay, it serves as a golden tribute to his wife, Lucy – the inspiration behind many of his anthems and ballads over the years. For all of us, it’s an immediate reminder of that exceptional person who brightens our lives – the one who brings us joy even on gloomy days, capable of turning "grey skies into blue."
With an energetic, lively rhythm and uplifting, soaring melodies, Bay and Batiste infuse the warm euphoria and romance of love into a cinematic, moving, and irresistibly catchy celebration.
You’re the reason, you’re the feeling
Make me wanna rise in the morning
Nothing better, am I dreaming
When I see you at the start of my day?
(That’s right)
I can’t recall any feeling
So worth believing before you came
There’s no other way I know to express this
I don’t know how
I don’t know why
You transform grey skies into blue
You’re the ultimate high
You shine so brilliantly
You’re like sunshine in the room
Sunshine in the Room – James Bay ft. Jon Batiste
“Collaborating with Jon Batiste on ‘Sunshine in the Room’ is an unforgettable experience,” Bay shares with Atwood Magazine. “He came into the studio like a burst of sunshine and added so much joy to the sound of the recording and the process. He’s an absolute inspiration, and I hope to collaborate with him again. The song is about having someone in your life who truly brightens the room as soon as they enter.”
Released in January, “Sunshine in the Room” follows Bay’s fourth studio album, *Changes All the Time*, a captivating project he has described as his first taste of “true musical freedom.” This album marks his first-time collaborations with various prominent artists – including Brandon Flowers of The Killers, The Lumineers, and singer/songwriters Noah Kahan and Holly Humberstone.
“Working with Brandon Flowers, collaborating with Holly Humberstone, these experiences have been a privilege, allowing me to engage with them as both a fan and a student,” Bay expressed to Atwood Magazine in a feature from last fall.
“I’m definitely a student of Brandon, but absolutely a student of Holly. It doesn’t matter that she’s younger and newer to this than I am; she’s remarkable in her own right. I say that as a fan and a contemporary, and there’s so much for me to learn… Creating this record was such a fluid and spontaneous experience.”
James Bay on Achieving True Musical Freedom With His Fourth Album ‘Changes All the Time’:: INTERVIEW ::
A five-time GRAMMY Award winner, EMMY Award winner, and Academy Award winner (in addition to his seven+ acclaimed studio albums and a wealth of soundtracks, EPs, live records, and standalone collaborations), Jon Batiste is yet another extraordinarily talented musical partner; it’s fitting that these two celebrated artists would join forces to create a sweet, soulful, and sun-drenched celebration, finding commonality in that one thing that connects us all.
“Working with Jon felt so right and exciting for this song,” Bay smiles. “There was no guarantee; we had to ask him and hope he would agree after dreaming up the idea that he could be a great feature. He brought so much joy, literally so much sunshine to the session and the track. I’m not exaggerating when I say that everything about his playing captures what I adore in any instrumentalist. It’s incredibly inspiring! And his voice! Wow, he reached some notes I could never imagine hitting!”
I go in and out of speaking about
The specialness you bring to my life
I could shout it from the peak of any mountain
At any time of the day
You know how to uplift me
It doesn’t matter how you do it, I cherish you
There’s only one way I know to express this
‘Cause I don’t know how
I don’t know why
You turn grey skies into blue
You’re the ultimate high
You shine so brilliantly
You’re like sunshine in the room
