Wish You Well: Ruger’s Rise Across Cultures

Ruger's musical journey is an engaging story of development, self-assurance, and unwavering creativity. From the outset of his career, it was evident that he was not just another performer; he was an emerging talent set to leave his imprint. His debut EP, 'Pandemic', revealed his unwillingness to conform to a specific genre. His blend of Afrobeats and dancehall reflected not only his influences but also an artist carving out his unique niche.

Since 'Pandemic', Ruger's sound has continually progressed through projects that challenge conventions, consistently exceeding expectations and demonstrating that his artistic expression has no confines.

‘BlownBoy Ru’ is not merely an album; it is a declaration of purpose. “I create from experience; it’s effortless for me to narrate my life story through my projects,” the 25-year-old explains. With this album, he takes a daring step into new realms, honoring his past while aiming toward the future with renewed motivation and creativity.

Released in 2024, the single ‘Toma Toma’ (featuring Tiwa Savage) elevated Ruger’s game, blending Brazilian Funk with Afrobeats and moving away from the traditional Afropop sound. The follow-up track ‘Jay Jay’, a significant collaborative hit, offered a glimpse into this eagerly awaited album. The Afro-fusion star maintains the energy with a rich mix of afrobeats, dancehall, and cultural sounds, giving the album an international vibe. This exploration of cultural intersections has further broadened his appeal and solidified his status in the music industry.

As Ruger progresses, ‘BlownBoy Ru’ represents a crucial milestone in his career. He is on the brink of something much bigger, and the world is definitely paying attention.

How does BlownBoy Ru differentiate itself from your past releases?

This project has a narrative. It’s distinct. It includes tracks that illustrate my previous experiences, the journey I've taken, and how it has unfolded, highlighting both the highs and the lows. It reflects my relationships, both romantic and platonic, which are universal parts of our lives. Since I write from personal experience, it’s natural for me to express my life story in my work. That’s what I want to convey to the world. It also captures how far my music has come and where it is headed.

You've always exuded confidence in your music, but this album feels unique. The powerful introduction sets the tone for your journey and underscores your standing in the industry. How has your self-perception as an artist changed?

As anyone who ascends in life does, I’ve grown and gained confidence. Interestingly, I had the melody for the introduction since 2021. However, I struggled to articulate my thoughts back then. I hadn’t yet experienced what I wanted to express. I wrote the intro last December, which flowed easily as I had matured and experienced significant growth. I had reached a point where I was able to articulate what I wanted to convey. I don’t rush music; I will never rush it. If inspiration isn’t present, I’ll wait until it’s time for me to express my thoughts.

Describe your creative process for this album.

Most of the tracks were developed from scratch, thanks to Kukbeatz, who produced the majority of the songs. We traveled the world together, creating music throughout 2024. After performances, we would return to the studio and experiment with instruments and sounds, allowing the music to come to life. Everything was crafted from the ground up, which is why the chords and lyrics feel unique and profound. If you listen closely to my lyrics, you’ll notice that I search for the right words, meticulously crafting my messages. I don’t opt for the simplest phrases; it’s akin to composing an essay for submission. The creative process was enjoyable yet challenging, and I cherished the journey.

Your songs often convey the emotional ups and downs of love. What is the biggest lesson love has taught you?

To always be honest from the start and clear about your intentions.

What are your thoughts on the evolution of your sound so far?

I’m simply thrilled that I haven’t tapped into my full potential yet. There’s much more I can explore, and I’m in a phase of still searching. My next project will be different, digging deeper into how far I can extend my creativity.

Which track on the album are you most eager for your fans to hear? Why?

‘Give Away’ is one track I’m particularly excited about, especially with Zlatan featuring on it; it’s very energetic. ‘Muah’ will resonate with the ladies, and with summer approaching, my collaboration with Kranium is also a standout!

You collaborated with major artists like Tiwa Savage, Zlatan, and Kranium on BlownBoy Ru. How did these collaborations come to be?

Tiwa Savage is incredible. She's been a strong presence in the industry for years. When I reached
