It embraces their confrontational aspect...
Garbage has released a new single titled ‘There’s No Future In Optimism.’
The trans-Atlantic rock icons have returned, with their new album ‘Let All That We Imagine Be The Light’ set to be released on May 30th. The album was recorded in various locations including Red Razor Sounds in Los Angeles, Butch Vig’s studio Grunge Is Dead, and Shirley Manson’s bedroom, with longtime collaborator Billy Bush overseeing production.
The new single ‘There’s No Future In Optimism’ is now available and expresses anger about the current state of the world. The song originated from discussions among the band about the overall situation, while Shirley Manson’s lyrics reflect her experiences in Los Angeles following the killing of George Floyd.
Filled with righteous fury, ‘There’s No Future In Optimism’ calls for action – complemented by a cinematic video directed by Benjy Kirkman, this track is a strong message from the alt-rock veterans.
Shirley Manson shares her thoughts…
I love the title. When the band sent it to me, I thought, “This is fantastic. I’m keeping it.” However, the lyrics serve as a response to that title. If we let our pessimism and fatalism completely take over, we will fall apart. It’s about a city, in my case, Los Angeles, but it could be any place where negative events are occurring.
After the murder of George Floyd, an experience I deeply wish I had never witnessed: that footage of the policeman kneeling on George Floyd’s neck completely changed me. In Los Angeles, there were massive protests and significant upheaval following that. Above our Hollywood home, helicopters flew overhead constantly for days. It was an extremely tense, chaotic, and frightening time.
Tune in now.
