A fantastic new release from a beloved band...

Now we're getting somewhere.
Reunion concerts are enjoyable (and in the case of Pulp's 2023 return, quite remarkable), but nothing can match the thrill of new music. Humans naturally crave more, and Jarvis Cocker, Candida Doyle, Mark Webber, and Nick Banks have been attentive to that need.
It kicks off with a high-pitched whistle, followed by a cymbal introduction, before bursting into vibrant, colorful Pulp. With a bassline that clearly invites a remix (which is likely coming), the guitar riff feels fresh yet immediately recognizable. Jarvis, as always a keen observer of humanity, is ahead of the curve with the opening line: "Something had stopped me dead in my tracks.” Indeed, that feeling resonates.
Jarvis’ voice has withstood the test of time, still radiating the same sharp charisma that characterized much of the ‘90s. He even delivers a classic grunt and, with a playful wink, asserts, “I exist to do this, shouting and pointing.” The lyrics appear to recount the iconic 1990 event, although the lore indicates that the Stone Roses were nearly overshadowed by the electrifying atmosphere, due to the sound problems that plagued their performance. The song was co-written with Jason Buckle, Jarvis’ collaborator in the side project Relaxed Muscle, who actually experienced the event firsthand—unlike Jarvis himself.

However, as he is quick to remind (calling out audiences for chanting his name instead of the band became a recurring theme in 2023), it’s not just about The Jarvis Show. Producer James Ford maintains his remarkable track record, showcasing each member's strengths; Candida Doyle contributes an elegant, shimmering synth line, one of her finest, while Nick Banks delivers a tight, relentless beat that complements Webber’s striking guitar work. Extra points for a subtle pause before a drop and the final chorus built to be sung back by festival audiences.
As was always Pulp’s forte, “Spike Island” skillfully balances nostalgia and optimism (“This time I’ll get it right”), but for now, we are focused solely on what lies ahead.
Want more? Yes, please.
