Magnolia Park continues to keep fans guessing with their spontaneity. The Floridian group skillfully mixes sounds and genres on their own terms, shifting from trap beats to classic nu-metal guitar riffs. Their passion for music fuels their creation of truly distinctive sounds, and they continuously evolve, never staying confined to a single genre for too long, which makes it hard to categorize them. Emerging from modest beginnings covering songs on TikTok, the band has achieved significant success, firmly establishing their place within the pop-punk scene.

Today, they are acclaimed for their vast musical talent and dynamic performances. Sharing the stage with many of their idols, the band is positioning themselves as icons for the upcoming generation of pop-punk artists, demonstrating their versatility and innovation with every guitar riff and vocal delivery.

Their eagerly awaited fourth studio album, VAMP (scheduled for release on April 11th via Epitaph), elevates the stakes by exploring darker themes and incorporating heavier instrumentation. The band enriches its sonic palette with powerful guitar riffs and intense vocals that were not as prevalent in their earlier works. This transformation in sound started in Australia, where they decided to revisit the heavier aspects of their previous project, Halloween Mixtape II, embracing a fierceness that excites both the band and their fans.

Beyond their musical talent, the band excels at constructing narratives, infusing the album with lore-based characters and storylines that resonate deeply with listeners. The narrative of VAMP is richly immersive and integrates seamlessly into the broader mythology of Nocturne Nexus, a fictional universe “where rulers and rebels clash with the fate of the future at stake.”

Combining their deep affinity for anime and sci-fi, the band created characters such as Aurora X1 and her Shadow Breakers, who fight to merge the shadow realm with the physical world. This album is not merely about the music; it is an ambitious exploration of the band’s creative mind, reflecting their evolution and ability to engage audiences.

Below, Atwood Magazine delves into the world of VAMP and the influences that brought Nocturne Nexus to life through conversations with Magnolia Park’s vocalist Joshua Roberts and guitarist Tristan Torres.

      A CONVERSATION WITH MAGNOLIA PARK

      — —

Atwood Magazine: What personal experiences inspired you when creating the world of Nocturne Nexus?

Tristan Torres: We share a great love for anime. From the beginning, I think me, Josh, and Freddy bonded over our mutual admiration for cartoons and anime. Growing up watching anime played a big part in that inspiration.

Joshua Roberts: We always aspired to do something like this.

Torres: For us, it’s personal to tell our own story through our music. My dad worked as an animator for Disney for a while, among other things, and that really inspired me as a child to pursue something similar.

I refer to it as the MPU, the Magnolia Park Universe. You've got characters like Baku and TV Head. How do those characters from your earlier works fit into the world you've created for this album?

Roberts: Essentially, characters like TV Head, Baku, and Pumpkin Eater exist in this nether realm we’re crafting. Currently, we’re on phase two, where you’ll see a different side of this world we’re building—not as whimsical or lighthearted. The first phase had more fun characters, whereas phase two brings some collisions between old and new characters and allows you to uncover their identities.

Torres: We’ve hidden Easter eggs in some of the artwork. For instance, in the slums, you might spot Baku’s bruise, along with Houdini’s Emporium, the magic shop. We’re merging worlds and providing little Easter eggs for fans to discover.

How many phases do you envision for this project?

Torres: We are taking our time with this. It’s primarily for our fans—we want them to feel connected to a world beyond just music or band members. It all started with Baku and the Halloween Mixtape series. Our aim is to develop this universe and explore its potential while transitioning between the Halloween mixtape and the VAMP series. We’re creative individuals, and we might even develop a new storyline that aligns everything together. We always strive to offer more than just an album.

Balancing your storytelling, lore, and music can be challenging while still being a band. How do you ensure you maintain that balance?

Roberts: Music always comes first. We prioritize making sure the music is right and that everyone is satisfied with it. Once the music is completed
