"No matter what they say about me – I will always – and forever – rock HARDER than most..."
Shirley Manson, the lead singer of Garbage, has responded to the media’s “weaponised” remarks concerning her appearance.
The singer propelled the band to international fame in the 90s, and their reunion in the 21st century has seen numerous remarkable successes. With their new single ‘There’s No Future In Optimism’ now available, Garbage are back and ready to express their views.
A recent press photo was picked apart by the Daily Mail, which published a report claiming the band appeared “unrecognisable.” In response, Shirley Manson took to Instagram to share her thoughts.
“Quite the headline from the Daily Mail yesterday. What does THIS even mean?!? The Druids look almost exactly as they have for thirty years, so I can’t help but think this is aimed at me.”
“Listen – I’m nearly sixty years old. Obviously, I’m not going to resemble my twenty-something self?!?” she continued. “Frankly, I think it would be a bit odd if I did, but that’s just my opinion. Regardless, this type of language is weaponised to keep women like me in their place.”

Wrapping up with a bold statement, Shirley Manson dismissed the “gift,” stating: “This gift is a fail. I will continue to age as I do. I will continue to acquire wrinkles and changes, lose an inch here and gain a couple there – but I will still look adorable in my pajamas with bedhead and no makeup, and I will always – no matter my appearance – no matter their opinions of me – I will always – and forever – rock HARDER than most.”
Garbage is set to release their new album ‘Let All That We Imagine Be The Light’ on May 30th.
