Originally hailing from New Haven, Connecticut, singer/songwriter Aaron Taos draws on his roots for his latest creative venture: Showpony. Though Taos is generally recognized for his lighter pop sound, he established Showpony to delve into his passion for psychedelic and alternative rock. The band emerged from his desire to represent New Haven, a city that holds significant meaning for Taos. Resonating with that vision, Tyler Lindsay joined him to form the duo known as Showpony.

      “Shine” – Showpony

Their debut single, “Shine,” features a darker, more dramatic sound compared to their previous work. Inspired by their common experiences in New Haven, Showpony incorporates the city’s grit and character into their music, lyrics, and overall aesthetic. With gritty textures and distorted guitars, the duo aims to embody the New Haven they know.

      Tightrope as she walks by

      Straddling the afterlife

      Smiling at the world outside

      She waves goodbye, say goodnight

      Wait to bow, the audience

      is screaming for one more

      Baby, it’s your last encore

Your time to shine, in the spotlight

Telling the story from the viewpoint of a stage performer, “Shine” questions society’s views on the entertainment industry. While performances provide an escape for audiences, they can be taxing on the performers — especially when passion turns into pressure and performance becomes a necessity for survival. Artists often hide their internal struggles behind a smile; meanwhile, the crowd may be enjoying the best night of their lives, while the performer silently faces their own challenges. “Shine” addresses the harsher truths of show business, offering a candid and insightful perspective to listeners.

“‘Shine’ is the second song that Tyler and I wrote for the Showpony project,” Taos shares with Atwood Magazine. “Tyler and I typically start playing around on acoustic guitars until a melody or chord progression catches our attention, and then we build on that. That’s how ‘Shine’ was created. Thematically, the song depicts a stage performer who dramatically ends her life in the middle of a performance. We wanted the music to embody that grandiosity, so the track is filled with rich acoustics, powerful lead riffs, and vocal harmonies. Both Tyler and I are fans of bands like The Last Shadow Puppets, Queens of the Stone Age, and The Clash—musicians who incorporate theatrical aspects into their work. That was our goal with this song.”

      And oh there she goes

      Sending shivers down your spine

As she’s burning through the night

      Oh there she goes

And it might just make you cry

      How a star can’t help

      but shine, shine, shine

The blend of original storytelling, sonic ambition, and emotional depth distinguishes Showpony from the start. There’s an exciting thrill in witnessing a band develop from their inception, and Showpony is already leaving their mark.
