      I considered going out,

now I prefer to stay in

I saw you departing town with your friends

I thought I would know by now

      And if you ever thought

      about trying this again

Is there room on your shoulder?

Room on Your Shoulder – Adam Melchor & Mt. Joy

Released on January 10th via R&R / Good Boy Records and featuring Mt. Joy’s Matt Quinn and Sam Cooper, “Room on Your Shoulder” is Adam Melchor’s tribute to lasting friendship: an outstretched hand, a genuine confession, and a heartfelt plea for help and emotional support, all encapsulated in a deeply moving serenade. As the lead single from his upcoming third studio album, The Diary of Living (set to release on May 2nd), the New Jersey-born, Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter delves deep into his emotional landscape, presenting a moment of raw human connection. Melchor skillfully intertwines poetic lyrics with an intimate acoustic sound as he expresses his desire to support someone during their darkest moments while also needing that same kindness in return. With Matt Quinn’s delicate harmonies and Noah Conrad’s textured production, “Room on Your Shoulder” transcends mere music: it becomes a safe haven, a sanctuary, and a testament to the resilience found in being there for one another.

Illustrating that great things take time, Melchor shares that this song has been seven years in the making, having originated during a tour with Mt. Joy in 2018. “’Room on Your Shoulder’ is about friendship, longevity, and the true essence of the creative journey – and it was finally completed this past year while I was recording The Diary of Living,” he explains with a smile.

“This song is incredibly meaningful to both me and us, so it took a considerable amount of time to perfect the production. When I finally showcased it to Noah Conrad, our album producer, he understood how to simplify it back to its essential form, just as it sounded on the day we composed it. Mt. Joy was one of the first bands that allowed me to open for them on tour, and that experience ignited my love for life on the road. Therefore, this song serves as a wonderful reminder of how long it can take for good things to come to fruition.”

‘The Diary of Living,’ Adam Melchor’s third album, will be released on May 2nd.

Both intimately personal and universally relatable, “Room on Your Shoulder” realistically portrays the painful lows and joyful highs of our shared human experience.

In terms of themes, Melchor and Mt. Joy confront feelings of heartache, nostalgia, grief, and yearning, delving into the familiar sensations of loneliness and desire, and how we naturally turn to our loved ones during our darkest times. The song also encapsulates the warmth of having those individuals close by, emphasizing the profound emotional significance of having such deep love and light in our lives. Melchor’s soft vocals blend with Matt Quinn’s sturdier tones in a harmony that feels like a conversation between old friends – wounded yet resilient, exposed yet brimming with love.

“It has undergone many changes, but throughout, the song has remained close to our hearts,” Melchor tells Atwood Magazine. “This song is intended to convey forgiveness and the possibility of a future beyond current pain. It also serves as a tribute to friendship and camaraderie, illustrating how the chapters of our lives need
