Laci Kaye Booth’s music embodies a blend of resilient determination and soft elegance. With nearly a decade in the country music scene, Booth brings a fresh and distinctive sound that the genre has long needed. No one in the industry quite compares to Booth. In her track “Nightmare,” she reveals her innermost struggles to her audience. The song resembles a poetic narrative accompanied by steady guitar and ethereal strings that subtly support Booth’s powerful vocals.

Booth has a remarkable ability to create vivid imagery through her songwriting, a skill that has traditionally been associated with artists like Lana Del Rey. Rather than drawing inspiration from Hollywood’s classic era, Booth’s imaginative realm consists of summer backroads, trucks cruising down highways, gas station restrooms, and smoky bars.

Good girls do what they’re told, never say no

She’s still in my bones and I’m trying to undo it

I lay me down to overthink

      Count mistakes instead of sheep

      I never outgrew it

I see a red flag and I like the color

I should probably call my mother

And I think I found my heart

when I lived in a trailer park

      – “Nightmare,” Laci Kaye Booth

In May of last year, Booth launched her debut LP, The Loneliest Girl in the World (via Geffen/Interscope), which was recognized by Atwood Magazine as one of the Best Albums of 2024. The collection is insightful, soulful, and laden with sharp lyrics. Produced by her friend and collaborator, Ben West, the album features astute storytelling, atmospheric production, and a dreamy soundscape with an impactful quality. As you listen, it becomes clear that this woman with long golden hair, soft lips, and wide eyes is made of strength and is unwavering in her artistic pursuits.

Most importantly, The Loneliest Girl in the World presents a fully realized female viewpoint, often overlooked in modern American country music.

You may know Booth from her Top 5 finish on the 17th season of American Idol (2019). Soon after, she signed with Big Machine, where she released her self-titled EP. A year later, in what may have been a fortunate twist of fate, Booth was dropped by Big Machine. In 2023, she joined Geffen Records, where she discovered a creative freedom that had been absent in her earlier work. This newfound liberation enabled Booth to produce one of the most impressive country music records of 2024 alongside her producer, partner, and friend, Ben West. The opening track, “Cigarettes,” pays homage to her previous experiences, with the lyrics, “And the same champagne that they bought me, I popped it when they dropped me.”

It has been exactly one year since Laci Kaye Booth released The Loneliest Girl in the World. Atwood Magazine described it as “a triumph… Booth and West have crafted a very special album that expands the horizons of country lyricism and offers a comprehensive female perspective often lacking in American country music.”

After the album's release, Booth toured the UK, Europe, and the United States, supporting acts like Kameron Marlowe, Morgan Wallen, and Megan Moroney. In the meantime, she released her latest single, “Daddy’s Mugshot.” Booth’s sound has evolved, blending dreamy atmospheric country with elements of outlaw country, marked by a distinctly feminine touch. “Daddy’s Mugshot” was co-written by Booth and country artist Morgan Evans, who is also her partner.

Now I’m a little too Texas for Tennessee

I smiled in the picture, but I was gritting my teeth

They found bitter in my bones when they broke this show pony

Said I’d be a star; hell, they don’t even know me

What runs in the blood ain’t ever gonna stop

I might look like my mama

But I smile like my daddy’s mugshot

The song draws inspiration from her father. “I wrote this after I came across my dad’s mugshot on Facebook. It prompted me to write about him, my experiences, the inherited challenges I face, and the struggle to find success in Nashville.” The track features gritty undertones, reminiscent of a western film shot in shadowy hues, yet it also contains a layer of wry humor.
