Mustard Service continues to define their unique, vibrant sound, which they label "zest pop." Their music is a mix of playful and sincere, incorporating Latin rhythms, surf rock guitars, jazz elements, and meaningful lyrics. Their newest single, "Conversation Overtime," is no different. Released on April 25 through Handwritten Records, the song delves into that delicate moment when a conflict escalates and genuine communication shifts to tension. With smooth vocals, captivating keyboard lines, sparkling guitar work, and rich production, the band addresses the burden of unspoken friction in a way that feels both refreshingly real and strangely reassuring. Atwood Magazine spoke with Mustard Service’s Marco Rivero, Leo Cattani, and Adam Perez about “Conversation Overtime,” and how difficult truths are often best conveyed with a smile. The band also hinted at what’s next, including new music and wild tour tales (and yes, mustard was part of it).

Atwood Magazine: The premise of “Conversation Overtime” feels both specific and universal. The lyrics highlight that gray area where silence can resonate just as powerfully as yelling. How did you articulate that tension without being overly explicit?
Mustard Service: This question reminds me of Tony Asher’s comments about The Beach Boys’ song, “Don’t Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder).” He noted that it's unusual to write a song about not talking, but we succeeded with it. I think this theme may resonate similarly, though it takes a different angle. Instead of romantic silence, “Conversation Overtime” focuses on silence due to a lack of communication. While I wouldn’t equate our lyrics to theirs—since they are legends and I’m just an indie artist— I do relate to Asher’s challenge in expressing silence through words. We hope we can convey the emotion appropriately, but the rest is beyond our control.
Musically, the song has a soothing quality despite its heavy emotional themes. How did you achieve that balance?
Mustard Service: Don’t we all need a bit of comfort when we’re emotionally strained? A tough message is often received better when delivered gently.
If someone finds themselves in the midst of a communication breakdown, what do you hope this song provides for them?
Mustard Service: A moment of relief or at least the bravery to seek it. While I don’t think anyone should look to musicians for relationship advice, I would suggest recognizing when discussions morph into arguments and pause until tempers cool. Good decisions are rarely made in anger.

Your previous single “Big Time” addresses the challenge of severing ties with someone toxic, even amidst love. What was the most difficult aspect of crafting that song?
Mustard Service: It's navigating friends' curiosity about whom it's about. [laughs] Sometimes a song doesn’t focus on a specific individual but rather an amalgamation of my experiences and those I care about. I’ve played the role of both narrator and subject, so it’s more about the concept than a person.
If your friends struggle with substance use, especially long-term, you likely know how difficult it can be to communicate with them. Addicts may resort to deceitful behavior. Avoid drugs… and if your friends are using hard substances, it’s okay to part ways when you realize they can’t be helped. It’s unfortunate, but you can only offer so much support.
With both “Big Time” and “Conversation Overtime,” there's a contrast between intense themes and an upbeat sound. Why do you think this
