Musical expression doesn't always originate from notes or chords; often, the emotion that drives songs comes from other art forms.
A brief search online can reveal numerous examples supporting this notion, and drummer Jack Condon and guitarist Fionn Brennan stand as living proof.
For the Irish alternative rock band Search Results, inspiration frequently stems from comedy, film, or theater. The Dublin-based group has a profound passion for comedy that rivals, if not surpasses, their enthusiasm for music. By referencing both established and emerging comedians, it’s clear that comedy serves as a vital creative avenue for them—a realm filled with entertaining imagination.
Fresh off the excitement of The Great Escape in Brighton, their notable music event is just one of many live performances slated for this year. The indie band is gaining traction, and 2025 may well be their most significant year yet. Their latest studio album, ‘Go Mutant,’ marks their most ambitious effort to date.
Thirteen could indeed be their lucky number. With its bold sound, the thirteen tracks on the album showcase a diverse yet carefully curated selection of Pavement-inspired, beautifully imperfect tunes to dive into. As they make significant strides forward, it’s a fitting progression for a group whose earlier works include the EPs ‘Mirrors’ (2021), ‘No Punchline Arousal’ (2022), and ‘Information Blip’ (2023).
What ties these three releases together is the infectious energy of post-punk. “It’s crucial to feel excited,” asserts Condon. “This excitement should be the foundation of being in a band; you must share that excitement. Otherwise, it will reflect in the outcome.”
Brennan agrees, adding, “Not much has really changed in a positive way. There may be minor adjustments in songwriting, but the overall enthusiasm and attitude have remained consistent, which is great—it feels like it’s even improved.”
It's hard not to be charmed by the enthusiasm of these two musicians, whose influences span a wide and well-informed range. With inspirations from The Beatles and Yo La Tengo to various jazz artists, their musical landscape is rich and diverse.
Condon and Brennan enthusiastically discuss American comedians. “I don’t know,” Condon reflects. “Our music is influenced by various factors, both musical and non-musical. We are big fans of comedy, which often seeps into our work.”
Comedians like Neil Hamburger and Andrew Dice Clay, as well as Shane Clifford, inspire them. “We’re definitely fans; he’s fantastic. We had him open for our first show, and although he seemed somewhat disinterested because he had performed similar gigs before, we made sure to pay him with Hobnob biscuits.”
‘Go Mutant’ is a vibrant project that blends original studio work with the essence of a live performance, giving the songs an authentic and raw quality. Lyrically sharp, it offers a sonically compelling listening experience.
The journey of Search Results is characterized by ongoing dynamics, a continuous process of gathering information and applying insightful knowledge creatively. “Through writing, I’m getting more accustomed to things,” Brennan reflects. “We’re still learning. It feels like there are significant dynamic changes. At times, there’s a lack of attention span; some of our songs vary quite a bit, which I enjoy. It’s nice to have a song that maintains a steady pace.”
‘Go Mutant’ will be released on May 23rd.
