The North Carolina band Wednesday has unveiled a new song titled "Elderberry Wine."
The group has established themselves as a significant force, driven by the exceptional songwriting of Karly Hartzman. Their early albums garnered attention in the American underground scene, and their 2023 release, "Rat Saw Dog," which is their first with Dead Oceans, marked a pivotal moment for them.
Anticipating their television debut on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" tonight, Wednesday has released "Elderberry Wine."
This release comes at an opportune time, as the elderberry blossoms are in bloom. The track is a beautiful blend of indie rock infused with sweet Americana, a combination that Wednesday has long mastered.
Lyrically, the band delves deeper; Karly Hartzman uses the song to reflect on healing and the relationship between our surroundings and emotional well-being.
"'Elderberry Wine' explores how the potential for sweet experiences in life (such as love, family, and success) can turn toxic if not properly managed," Hartzman shares. "Elderberry is recognized as a healing fruit, often found in various tonics and syrups to boost the immune system. However, there was a time when my sister ate them raw, and it caused her to vomit immediately. Therefore, 'Elderberry Wine' ultimately serves as a love song about creating the right environment for fulfillment. A delicate balance is required, especially in love, for two lives to come together without harming one another."
Now available, "Elderberry Wine" features a compelling video directed by Spencer Kelly, who remarks: "We filmed most of this music video at The Bench, Greensboro’s second-oldest bar and one of its most lively spots. On any day, you'll see a diverse group of people sharing stories beneath the loud music."
"We arrived with some specific scripted scenes but aimed to authentically capture the bar atmosphere—everyone you see in the video is a regular, including Karly’s dad, George. This video serves as a love letter to places like this, where the sense of community is strong and the beers are always cold."
