A magnificent comeback from the art-pop duo...

The recent trajectory of Sparks is truly remarkable. After more than 50 years, the Mael brothers continue to produce work that would put to shame those half their age, while critically acclaimed films have rekindled the public's affection for this impressive art-pop project. Their new album ‘MAD!’ arrives as Sparks gain momentum, encapsulating everything unique about this phase of their career.
Self-produced and proudly independent—it's their first release with UK indie label Transgressive—the album is brimming with ideas. As songwriters who savor even the smallest details in their characterizations, Sparks fill the tracks with subtle yet striking vignettes and a variety of cameo appearances.
The brilliantly catchy opener ‘Do Things My Own Way’ serves as an apt motto for the entire record; ‘JanSport BackPack’ offers a delightfully clever wordplay feast, while ‘My Devotion’ bursts forth with an impressive surge of pop energy. Yet, amidst the joy, there remains Sparks’ thirst for melodrama, exemplified by the poignant ‘Drowning In A Sea Of Tears’ dedicated to emotional repression.
For those Anglophiles who have successfully crossed the ocean, certain lyrics carry a distinct mid-Atlantic vibe—‘Running Up A Tab At The Hotel For The Fab’ instantly evokes thoughts of the Fab Four, reminding us that Sparks emerged during the British Invasion. ‘A Little Bit Of Light Banter’ feels reminiscent of Noel Coward, underscoring a timeless essence that runs through ‘MAD!’.
Concluding with the energetic ‘Lord Have Mercy,’ the band has effectively captured the vitality of their recent electrifying live shows—such as their performance at the Royal Albert Hall—on two sides of vinyl. As pop classicists with a heart of gold, Sparks are outpacing imitators and reminding everyone why they continue to be cherished.

The later stages of Sparks' career are truly impressive. After more than 50 years, the Mael brothers continue to create music that would outshine many other artists.
