A stillness resides just beneath the surface – a hallowed silence, free from noise and haste. In this underwater quiet, the world decelerates. Concerns drift away. Breathing takes on a sacred quality. Time fades. This is the realm Lucie Glang invites us into with “Underwater Skies” – a gentle, serene folk-pop dream that eases tension, nurtures the spirit, and provides solace in song. Rooted in soft fingerpicked guitar, subdued piano chords, and her heartfelt, intimate vocals, Glang’s first single of the year offers a space for peace and surrender: a tune that helps you stay afloat when everything else feels like it’s sinking.
Underwater Skies – Lucie Glang
Hold your breath and count
Underwater Skies
Mumbled, indistinct sounds
Bring your body down
Feet glide over sand
Blue and tranquil towns
Imagine what it’s like
To linger here for a while
Exhale and don't surface
The blood flows, shifting tides
A body with you inside
The trembling sea surrounds
Atwood Magazine is excited to present “Underwater Skies,” the exquisitely meditative and deeply emotive new single from German singer/songwriter Lucie Glang. Set to release on May 22, 2025, via Nashville's Tonetree, “Underwater Skies” serves as the first glimpse of Glang’s forthcoming sophomore EP (expected in November) and marks her initial musical release of the year.
Once again collaborating with Danish producer Martin Korsgaard (who contributed to “Seagull” from her debut EP), Glang creates an immersive, atmospheric sonic landscape that draws listeners into a realm of reflection, stillness, and breath.
Warm acoustic sounds envelop her gentle, poignant voice as she sings of presence, release, and soft escape:
Everything now fades
Thoughts release you
Everything’s been spoken
The current pulls you far
Float away, my dear
Leave it as it was
Imagine what it’s like
To linger here for a while
Exhale and don't surface
The blood flows, shifting tides
A body with you inside
The trembling sea surrounds
It's a stunning harmony of beauty and vulnerability – a song that glistens with cinematic folk elements while lyrically capturing the calming yet disorienting experience of being submerged. Crafted as a means of self-soothing during periods of emotional intensity, “Underwater Skies” serves as a balm for both Glang and her audience.
“I wrote ‘Underwater Skies’ during a month where I dedicated myself to writing and recording a new concept every day,” Glang shares with Atwood Magazine. “This song emerged from a day when I felt utterly overwhelmed, and I sought to calm myself by envisioning what it would feel like to just drift away. I’ve always enjoyed being underwater, where I can fully immerse myself and release everything pulling me from the moment. The song captures that sensation, where thoughts blur and your body simply exists. I wanted to create a safe auditory space to retreat to in moments of anxiety. The choir at the end acts as a gentle awakening, bringing you back to the surface after floating into stillness.”
The song’s soundscape reflects this intention: Subtle ambient layers, soft water sounds, and organic synths add a dreamy lightness to the track. Its highlight – a choral surge composed of over 50 layered voices – gently elevates the listener, akin to air filling lungs after a prolonged breath-hold. It’s not merely catharsis; it’s rebirth.
There’s also a cinematic quality in the way Glang builds emotion with restraint, opting for calm rather than crescendo. Her voice – delicate yet expressive – carries each note with elegance and intention. “Float away, my dear / Leave it as it was,” she sings. In those lines, there’s a quiet wisdom: a readiness to relinquish control and allow oneself to be carried by the flow instead of resisting it.
“Underwater Skies” follows Glang’s debut EP, The Game (2024), and an array of editorial acclaim, with recognition from media outlets such as Sounds on the Couch and Ear to the Ground Music labeling her as “captivating,” “intimate,” and “remarkable.” Her folk-pop compositions merge Nordic influences with personal narratives, drawing parallels to artists like First Aid Kit, Fleet Foxes, and early Joni Mitchell. She has recorded in Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, and the United States – and this next chapter promises even more profoundly felt and meticulously crafted songs.
