"Creating lyrics in both Japanese and English has significantly contributed to discovering my unique sound and voice as an artist, and I believe it enables me to produce music that truly reflects who I am." We often hesitate to use this word, yet your style genuinely feels one-of-a-kind; ‘Animaru’ incorporates elements of jazz, bossa nova, and indie rock, along with lyrics in both English and Japanese. How did you arrive at this blend? Was there a specific moment of clarity, or a certain track that revealed the album’s sound to you? I don't recall a distinct moment; rather, it's a songwriting approach I've been honing since releasing my first single, ‘Hfoas,’ in 2020. That was the first song I created that featured both Japanese and English lyrics and also carried a more noticeable jazz influence. I believe those elements were the initial steps towards discovering my sound, and the album is about refining and expanding that. What influences outside of music shape your songwriting? Everyday life inspires me—what I observe when I walk around New York, cherished memories, places I go, friendships, family, and so on. Occasionally, I draw inspiration from literature; for instance, my favorite author, Haruki Murakami, explores fascinating themes and motifs. I'm also greatly influenced by my bandmates, as they are all outstanding musicians who encourage me to improve my skills. Lastly, if DIY is coming over for dinner, what are you preparing? Maybe I’ll make temaki sushi (hand roll sushi)! It’s quite easy to prepare and perfect for groups since everyone can customize their filling to create their preferred sushi :)
