Jens Lekman has announced his upcoming album titled ‘Songs For Other People’s Weddings’.
The Swedish musician has crafted a conceptual album that is tied to a book of the same name written by bestselling author David Levithan.
The book is set to be released on August 5th through ABRAMS, while Jens’ new album will follow on September 12th.
The title references a real-life quirk: Jens Lekman has a side job as a wedding singer, a role that emerged after fans took the title of his 2004 track ‘If You Ever Need a Stranger (To Sing at Your Wedding)’ literally and began inviting him to perform at their weddings.
The album is structured like a novel, chronicling the love story between characters J and V. Jens shares his thoughts…
The notion of creating a narrative concept album (possibly a rock opera?) felt a bit off-limits, which often indicates I'm heading in the right direction. While exploring the genre of narrative concept albums, I discovered that one of my favorite albums of all time, Frank Sinatra’s Watertown, is essentially that—a record that narrates a chronological story throughout the LP. Not being a fan of musicals or rock operas, this album provided me with inspiration.
While the narrative clearly revolves around a relationship and its reflection through the relationships and weddings of others, ultimately, I view it as a love story about music and its significance during a time when it seems to be undervalued and transformed into mere content by tech companies. Music’s capacity to comfort and connect, along with its role in important transitions in our lives, like weddings, serves as a tribute to love songs.
The gentle new track ‘Candy From A Stranger’ is now available—take a listen below.
