Travis Scott – JackBoys 2

A Houston celebration with mixed outcomes…

American hip-hop is moving beyond an era of rigidly defined collectives. The conflict between Drake and Kendrick essentially placed OVO against TDE, with clear distinctions made. Launched in 2017, Travis Scott's Cactus Jack label has carved a distinct identity while serving as a representative of Houston's diverse music scene. The 2019 album 'Jackboys' was an all-star collection that helped launch new careers and solidify existing ones. It featured essential tracks that became fan favorites, such as the Migos-enhanced 'Had Enough.'

The long-anticipated follow-up, 'JackBoys 2,' just dropped a few hours ago, and though it remains a various artists compilation, there is a satisfying if sometimes vexing coherence to the album. Heavily influenced by Travis Scott, the production reflects the sound palette of his recent projects—the perceptive tones of 'UTOPIA' resonate throughout each track.

Similar to its predecessor, the album can be hit-or-miss at times. There are definite standout moments in 'JackBoys 2'—Don Toliver shines as a compelling force, and 'No Comments' showcases his creative prowess; '2000 EXCURSION' brings the energy of a club anthem; and Travis Scott's own 'DUMBO' seems perfectly crafted for his live performances, likely making an appearance at this summer's Reading and Leeds festival.

Conversely, some tracks fall flat. 'BEEP BEEP' feels meandering, with the distorted vocals more distracting than threatening, and the 17-song lineup—making 'JackBoys 2' twice the length of its predecessor—fails to maintain consistent engagement throughout.

Released as part of Houston’s 713 Day, 'JackBoys 2' is intended to honor Travis Scott's hometown and the foundation of Cactus Jack. However, its release comes just days after Clipse dropped a track featuring a diss towards Travis from Pusha T, which is noteworthy. Travis only indirectly addresses the diss, referencing it in the outro of 'CHAMPAIN & VACAY' to critique older, less successful rappers; it feels more like a nonchalant dismissal than a direct challenge.

As a demonstration of strength from a significant rap collective, there's plenty to dissect here. Ultimately, for those who feel Travis Scott's artistry leans more towards style than substance, 'JackBoys 2' is unlikely to change their minds. However, for those captivated by the style, there’s a lot to absorb.
