Next Wave #1146: Kitty Amor

Kitty Amor is an unstoppable leader in London’s thriving Afro-house scene, but her journey to prominence has been far from straightforward. As a gay Black woman raised in a religious family, she first had to discover herself before she could connect with her community.

During her childhood, Kitty’s older brothers would sneak her UKG mixtapes, introducing her to a new world of music. Fascinated by the emerging sounds of funky house, she quickly immersed herself and began to explore the complex origins of what would become Afro-house. Attending university in Nottingham turned out to be a significant turning point; as she gained independence, she started organizing raves and discovered others who felt the dance scene did not represent them.

"I realized there were many like-minded people, individuals of color from various cultures," she reflects, "yet no places where we could truly see ourselves. I operated on a do-it-yourself basis, minimizing expenses, so I would DJ… I didn't recognize it at the time, but that’s when I honed my skills."

Kitty reminisces about Black Coffee's ‘Superman’ as a classic from that time, and began to serve as a bridge for the diaspora, connecting UK sounds with emerging house trends from Africa. "I aimed to educate people about its originality," she states. "It was music that boldly celebrated my culture and background. I knew we could break into the electronic music scene, drawing on deep historical roots."

When the pandemic left gaps in her schedule, Kitty Amor quickly utilized the time to improve her skills. "The music I play heavily influences me, making it hard not to generate my own ideas," she shares. "It’s a creative outlet for me, and I feel free from barriers or limitations."

With significant remix projects from Dennis Ferrer and London Grammar boosting her profile, Kitty Amor is eager to propel this music to new heights. It touches her soul deeply, and she wishes for Afro-house to resonate globally. "It’s hard to overlook the significance of this music right now," she explains. "I’m mindful of taking steps that will expand this music beyond the diaspora."

She isn’t alone in this endeavor. A new generation of club artists is embracing the sound, with Afro-house becoming one of the defining soundtracks of London this summer. "We’re witnessing the power of collaboration," she notes. "Once you become confident in who you are, your community will come to you."
