      "Vampire Bat" – Glass Animals

Bet you feel like a rock star,

      don’t you now?

I know you get a thrill

every time you bring me down

Like a rock star gone too far

You’ve got us all on a seesaw now

Released on August 8th, “Vampire Bat” is the fifth installment of Glass Animals’ cherished Fresh Fruit Series—a creative endeavor featuring experimental collaborations with various artists. For the band, particularly lead singer, songwriter, and producer Dave Bayley, this series holds significant importance, allowing participants to go beyond their own achievements, pushing boundaries and elevating their music in the name of art and innovation.

Previous tracks in the series include “Lose Control” with Joey Bada$$, “Gold Lime” (no longer available on streaming platforms), “Tokyo Drifting” with Denzel Curry, and “I Don’t Wanna Talk (I Just Wanna Dance)” with Albert Hammond Jr., each infusing a vibrant variety. “Vampire Bat” represents a partnership between Bayley and Los Angeles-based producer and engineer Rob Bisel, known for his collaborations with SZA, Kendrick Lamar, Doja Cat, and others.

Peter Piper picked a pickled pepper and he set off

Butcher, baker, candle maker thirsty for power

Bouncing around the room with a supersonic blast

Eating up the doom as the clock speeds past

A kiwi is a mix of a strawberry and a lime

So detuned that the truth is a tightrope line

Giving titty twisters like you’re stuck in 1999

Ate what you fed me, poot, poot, it’s a gold lime

      Lean back just like that

Push me down, make me dance

Oh, squeeze that, no more hands

Bit my lip like a vampire bat

Now lean back just like that

Push me down, make me dance

Oh, squeeze that, no more hands

Bit my lip like a vampire

In “Vampire Bat,” Glass Animals delve into the duality of being a rockstar and the complexities that come with fame. There’s a balancing act or a “seesaw” that artists navigate, fueled by a strong ambition for success, driven by hard work.

The smooth track welcomes listeners with captivating grooves that stir curiosity about relationships, opening with a spark that builds on expectations. The lyrics align perfectly with the percussion and the soothing vocals, drawing one into an empathetic insight into the artist’s life, inspiring enchantment and affection.

All in my face, Don Quixote, hee-haw

Spank the monkey, more bananas than Diddy Kong

Shattered like a melon thrown from the Eiffel Tower

      Such a menace, you’re a Dennis, you’re a true Hobbes

Ayy, man, what was that? Give me back my ciggie tax

      Ninety percent of a ten-pack

Took it to the club and you put it in a piggy bank

Butter fingers dipping lobster claws with your fat cats

      Lean back just like that

Push me down, make me dance

Oh, squeeze that, no more hands
