      “Lying” by The Tullamarines

“If I say I love myself, I’m lying.” This poignant line grips you emotionally, offering brutal honesty that is both relatable and unforgettable. The Tullamarines dive straight into vulnerability with “Lying,” the second single from their upcoming Safety Blanket EP. It’s an electrifying pop/rock anthem filled with both uncertainty and rebellion, transforming feelings of insecurity and self-doubt into something cathartic and addictive.

"I've never been sure about this

It’s deep down I can see

      how you missed it

But I just endure and that’s alright

I’m out of it half the time

Tried the best to fix my mind

      And I’ve been thinking lately

      you should pull me in

If I say I love myself I’m lying

But I still hope that I get points for trying, baby…”

Released in early June, “Lying” is among the catchiest tracks I’ve encountered in years, featuring jangly guitars, uplifting beats, and catchy hooks that encourage you to sing along by the second chorus. It combines nostalgia with freshness, encapsulating pop/rock energy reminiscent of the early 2000s, striking a balance between charm and depth. Beneath its infectious exterior, however, “Lying” reveals a profound honesty—a heartfelt confession about supporting oneself during tough times.

“Lying is about insecurity, imposter syndrome, self-loathing, and striving for improvement,” the Australian band, which includes Josh Thomas, Lucinda Machin, Angus Purvis, and Benny Waltho, shares with Atwood Magazine via email. “The recurring joke about people leaving before we perform stems from real doubts. We grapple with confidence regarding our music and image. We decided to express our feelings while infusing it with bright, ‘90s pop-inspired sounds. It’s a mix of sad and happy. Often, it feels easier to pretend we’re okay than to be vulnerable. We hope this song makes others feel recognized and opens the door to genuine discussions.”

"I don’t wanna tell someone in case I come undone

But I’ve been thinking lately how much to eat

I don’t think I’m anyone think year nine got me ’cause

I’m still believing all the things they said to me…”

The duality of their lyrics resonates throughout the song: “If I say I love myself, I’m lying / but I still hope that I get points for trying.” The band reflects, “It carries the meaning of wishing we could forgive ourselves for being too hard on our character or our body during low moments.” The lyrics are raw and poignant, yet imbued with such passion and energy that they feel empowering—like acknowledging pain is the first step to healing. This quality makes the song remarkable; The Tullamarines don’t dwell in their emotions; they transform them into an uplifting anthem filled with energy.

This candid honesty lies at the heart of Safety Blanket, a record that the band describes as having a refreshingly different sound from their previous works—opening up new creative avenues for the Adelaide-based four-piece. “We really wanted to push boundaries with ‘Lying,’” they explain. “The demo differed significantly from our usual style, and we had a blast with the syncopation and intertwining parts. It felt just right to amplify that ‘sad-happy’ vibe a bit more and indeed drew inspiration from Paramore’s After Laughter.”

“Being able to take that risk and receiving such a warm response has been fantastic,” they add. “It’s given us the confidence to continue exploring that sound.”

While their music is evolving, the band’s intent remains consistent: “We’re just four ordinary people aiming to be as honest as we can, hoping our experiences resonate with others,” they state. “If listeners can relate, know that we
