The Hives have now been around for over 30 years, and throughout this time, the Swedish rock band has remained steadfast in their goal of creating sharp and catchy garage punk that radiates fun and vibrant classic rock energy. Their seventh full-length album, with the unwieldy title ‘The Hives Forever Forever The Hives’, marks their second release in two years, showcasing their enduring passion and songwriting flair. ‘Enough Is Enough’ features an especially exhilarating vocal performance from frontman Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist, ‘O.C.D.O.D.’ captures the raw excitement of early ‘80s hardcore, while ‘Born On A Rebel’ exudes the boldness and confidence implied by its name. ‘Legalize Living’ is a joy, a heartfelt tribute to embracing life to the fullest: “See me ride into the sunset / See my banishing the sea / With explosions going off behind me.” While The Hives have certainly not deviated from their well-established formula, it would take a heart of stone not to feel invigorated by this new collection of suitably lively rock’n’roll anthems.
