Parlour Discussions: Maleek Berry

Summer represents a time to embrace life to its fullest; it's a period filled with hope, a chance to pursue freedom and enjoyment.

In honor of the bright days and warm nights we've experienced, CLASH and Magnum ice cream present Parlour Talks – a unique video series that revels in positivity, offering fans more than just a glimpse of their favorite artists. This is our Magnum Opus – a distinctive project brought to life by Magnum ice cream that celebrates a sensuous paradise.

Our vibrant host, Nella Rose, needs little introduction. Her cheerful and energetic personality has illuminated our screens, and she has been the face of her own CLASH cover story. Joining her for this episode is South London innovator Maleek Berry.

Growing up in Clapham, South London, Maleek was influenced early on by local talents like So Solid Crew and began producing beats while still in high school. His journey took a pivotal turn in 2011 when he relocated to Lagos, where he quickly gained recognition as a producer for artists like Davido and Wizkid. His eclectic sound, influenced by his background in computer science and a technology-oriented approach to music production, has garnered him two MOBO nominations and a dedicated international audience.

At one point, he considered stepping away from music entirely, but after some introspection, he returned with a fresh perspective. This growth is reflected in his debut album ‘If Only Love Was Enough,’ which was launched at the peak of summer. A project that connects the diaspora, it fuses Afrobeats and reggae, underscored by Maleek’s distinctive Afro-RnB sound.

Maleek joined Nella in our ice cream parlor, selecting the Double Cherry Magnum flavor. The two discussed Maleek’s production techniques and how he expresses love in its many forms through his honest debut LP.

“It’s a phrase that resonates with everyone…” he explains. “On a serious note, regarding relationships and friendships, there is so much more that plays a role. You have to consider emotional intelligence, communication, understanding… these factors extend beyond ‘love.’”

It was a pleasure to host Nella Rose and Maleek Berry for this conversation, adding a heartfelt celebration of summer to our Parlour Talks series.

      Tune in now…
