Familiarize Yourself With… Mên An Tol

"I believe you create the songs you wish to hear on a subconscious level, and right now, there's a real necessity for some positivity and understanding."

      — Bill Jefferson

The name Mên An Tol is derived from a set of standing stones in Cornwall. Your debut EP is titled ‘The Country,’ with a follow-up called ‘This Land.’ Can you share how concepts of place or regional/national identity play a role in your music? Regarding the name, one reason is simply that it sounds great for a folk-rock band. Another aspect is that it represents a lost symbol of the past: the idea of being connected to each other, perhaps a oneness of all humanity. The song titles and their themes weren't originally planned; as they emerged, a theme became more noticeable. It’s just what emerged: I think you write the songs you want to hear on a subconscious level, and there’s a need for some positivity and understanding right now.

Your latest single, ‘Not Ideal,’ was produced by Carlos O’Connell from Fontaines DC. How did this collaboration happen? What was it about his vision for the track that appealed to you? He attended one of our residency performances at The Dublin Castle in Camden, and we started talking afterward. We went for a pint and discovered we had a lot in common, which made me feel that collaborating would be a good fit. It was really intriguing to observe him in the studio, trying out ideas that wouldn't have crossed our minds. He has a keen ear and truly knows how to evoke a song's emotion through its delivery and sound.

      What’s your worst musical habit?

Most likely karaoke—everyone I know is probably tired of hearing ‘Dirty Old Town’ by now.

Lastly, DIY is coming over for dinner—what are you cooking?

Something Indian—my uncle used to do a lot of work fitting out Indian restaurants and picked up quite a bit from the chefs and owners, which has been passed down. You’re in charge of bringing the beers, though.
