LA's Rocket has meticulously prepared for their launch. Known for their studio perfectionism and a creative process that explores every detail, their debut album ‘R Is For Rocket’ is marked by remarkable confidence – a powerful and succinct opening statement, it is both impactful and nuanced when necessary. It offers an exhilarating experience from beginning to end, serving as a gritty audio manifesto that propels forward at breakneck speed.
The opening track ‘The Choice’ evokes images of ‘The Bends’ era Radiohead viewed through a rock perspective, balancing intricate arrangements with sonic heft. ‘Act Like Your Title’ bursts forth with a dynamic, slashing bassline and gothic melodies, while ‘Crossing Fingers’ channels a recent TURNSTILE vibe, featuring Baron Rinzler and Desi Scaglione excelling in their guitar work.
Transitioning between rock's intensity and delicate subtleties, ‘R Is For Rocket’ saw the band record in two different studios. The more complex elements were captured at 64 Sound in Highland Park, whereas Rocket also tapped into the massive drum sound at the Foo Fighters’ Studio 606 in Northridge.
What results is an album filled with contrasts. While ‘One Million’ delivers an arena-ready anthem, ‘Pretending’ explores their shoegaze influences, and the haunting beauty of ‘Number One Fan’ showcases Alithea Tuttle’s vocals, which embody a quiet strength.
‘Another Second Change’ stands out as a fierce rock track, while the exuberant closer ‘R Is For Rocket’ encapsulates the confidence with which Rocket tackles their debut. This record confidently merges impactful songwriting with high-quality production, bestowing a crisp, 90s-inspired sheen that does not compromise their raw live energy.
