Gretel Releases New Track 'Maybelline'

      "Perhaps I was born with it..."

      The artist Gretel, based in London, has unveiled her latest single, ‘Maybelline’, through Breadcrumb Records / AWAL.

      Gretel Hänlyn, who burst onto the scene at the age of 18 with her inaugural release ‘Slugeye’, has consistently gravitated towards the subversive, seeking out what lies just beyond the surface.

      Regarding the single, Gretel comments: “I composed ‘Maybelline’ after spending time with my nana, and it dawned on me that, while differences in generation exist, there are certain experiences shared universally among women.”

      “Such as dealing with a sense of performativeness and the gaze, which I believe makeup exemplifies and reflects. It can either be empowering or detrimental, depending on how one approaches it.”

      “Maybe I was born with it / Maybe it’s just Maybelline,” she sings, transforming the catchy yet kitschy tagline into something darker and more genuine, channeling her inner PJ Harvey.

      Evoking the theatrical pop of The Last Dinner Party or even the solo endeavors of Hayley Williams, you can listen to ‘Maybelline’ below.
