Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen Had an Unforgettable Night with Frank Sinatra

Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen once shared an evening with Frank Sinatra – at the personal invitation of Ol' Blue Eyes himself.

The iconic singer was one of the most significant figures of the 20th century, someone who genuinely charted their own course. In the 1940s, Frank Sinatra garnered intense admiration from teenage bobby-soxers before transitioning to a new path with prominent roles in Hollywood.

A remarkable vocalist, Frank Sinatra had a flair for making a grand entrance, which led to months of planning for his 80th birthday celebration in 1995.

A special televised concert was held, featuring Bruce Springsteen performing ‘Angel Eyes’ and, at Sinatra’s request, Bob Dylan delivering his own song ‘Restless Farewell’.

Frank Sinatra hosted an intimate dinner gathering where both Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan had the chance to fulfill their childhood dreams.

In his memoir Born To Run, Bruce Springsteen mentioned that his wife Patti Scialfa helped break the ice. “Sometime after dinner, we found ourselves gathered around the piano in the living room with Steve and Eydie Gorme and Bob Dylan. Steve was playing the piano, and up close, he and Eydie could really belt out the great standards. Patti had become quite knowledgeable in jazz thanks to Jerry Coker, a renowned jazz educator at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami,” he recounted. “She was there alongside Bruce Hornsby, Jaco Pastorius, and Pat Metheny, where she really honed her craft. At Frank’s, as the music flowed, she smoothly joined in on ‘My One and Only Love.’”

“Patti is a hidden gem. She can sing torch songs like a blend of Peggy Lee and Julie London (no exaggeration). Eydie Gorme heard Patti, paused the music, and said, ‘Frank, come over here. We’ve got a singer!’ Frank approached the piano, and I watched my wife beautifully serenade Frank Sinatra and Bob Dylan, receiving a wave of applause at the end. The next day, we performed at Frank’s 80th birthday celebration for ABC TV, and I had the privilege of escorting him to the stage alongside Tony Bennett. It was a wonderful evening and a perfect homage to the greatest pop singer of all time. Two years later, Frank passed away, and we were graciously invited to his funeral.”

Bob Dylan reminisced about that evening during a conversation with journalist Bill Flanagan in 2017, around the time he was curating an album of his renditions of songs made popular by Frank Sinatra.

“He was amusing; we stood out on his patio at night, and he said to me, ‘You and me, buddy, we have blue eyes; we’re from up there,’ as he gestured to the stars. ‘These other guys are from down here.’ I remember thinking that he might be onto something.”
