Rivers Run Red: CLASH Encounters The New Eves

The New Eves were en route to Rockfield Studios in rural Wales to record their first album when calamity struck. A torrential rainstorm fell from the sky, and their van suffered multiple breakdowns, with the engine struggling along the rough roads. “It was the middle of the night, pouring rain, and we had no lights or anything,” Ella Oona Russell remembers. “Then a farmer came to our rescue! Eventually, he drove us to the studio in his pick-up truck.”

This chaotic journey is a fitting introduction for The New Eves. Their music seems influenced by natural elements, offering glimpses of the strange amidst their post-punk and wyrd folk sound. Four musicians with distinct creative approaches come together seamlessly; their impressive debut album, ‘The New Eve Is Rising’, provides a beautiful insight into their collective unconscious.

“We began playing together after one of the early lockdowns,” shares Violet Farrer, who plays guitar, violin, and provides vocals. “We felt a strong urge to create music with others. It was a crazy accident that it all came together – we just clicked, and these wild sounds started emerging.”

At times, The New Eves evoke aspects of The Fall’s discography – a stubborn originality and a dive into the surreal – but they possess a clearly feminine essence. They are certainly unique and hard to ignore; their music has a hypnotic quality. “We wrote the album one song after another,” Violet recalls. “I remember those sessions – they were electric. We were all in awe.”

“It’s quite an eclectic mix of people,” Ella acknowledges. “We all have our differences. But once we learned to truly trust each other, great things started to happen.”

As they played together, The New Eves attracted a community. Perhaps it’s beneficial that their music defies easy categorization—they feel equally at home with the post-punk crowd at Brixton Windmill as they do with the Broadside Hacks folk community. “We’ve been carrying these songs with us for quite a while,” Ella mentions. “It’s taken a long time to share this body of work. It feels like a relief for them to finally belong to everyone!”

“The album came together very organically,” she observes, “but navigating the music industry and reaching a point where we had the right time and some funding to finally create it… that took quite a while. We started from scratch and had to learn everything along the way.”

“I believe that the music is this foundational element,” Violet adds. “It’s why we’re here and is its own complete entity.”

Guided by their songs, The New Eves connected with Transgressive – the label representing notable acts like Foals and Arlo Parks – prior to their memorable trip to Rockfield, where they began working with production team Jack Ogborne and Joe Jones.

“It was very intentional,” Ella says. “We loved our time at Rockfield—it became our little sanctuary. We enjoyed experimenting, trying out different sounds and playing around with reverb units and echo chambers.”

“We were very focused, driven by our desire to be there,” she continues. “We put in long days because it was so enjoyable. But we also went for lovely walks. We even connected with the cows!”

Recording the album live as much as possible, they nearly captured the enchanting energy of their concerts. The New Eves create a blissfully chaotic sound, existing on their own terms and generating a tangible sense of freedom for both the performers and the audience. “Much of this body of work – and I’d say our performances – feel like an incantation,” Oona expresses. “It’s a significant release.”

“The live shows are incredibly special,” Violet adds. “They always are. They remind us of our purpose – there’s such joy in them.”

The New Eves' success comes from their refusal to follow anyone's rules but their own—songs that may initially appear puzzling soon unveil a quirky logic. “When we come together in a room with these various instruments, something magical occurs,” Violet shares. “It feels completely authentic. That special feeling was there from our first rehearsal and remains today.”

As the band continues to grow, their evolution ties back to their individual interests. Each musician has their own creative pursuits—whether solo projects, visual arts, or other domains—which all contribute back to the group. “We need our separate endeavors—partly for our sanity, but also to bring back new ideas and keep things fresh,” Oona states.

“Many things in this band happen very naturally. Everything just clicks. It flows effortlessly. We’re eager to see where this journey leads us next.”
