Scottish folk artist and broadcaster Archie Fisher has passed away.

The unfortunate news was confirmed on the night of November 1st through various sources; the cause of death has not been disclosed, although Archie Fisher had recently started hospice care for cancer. He was 86 years old.

Coming from a respected family of Glasgow-based folk musicians, Archie Fisher exhibited his musical talents from an early age. Deeply rooted in the rich tradition of Scottish folk songs, he made his way to Edinburgh, establishing himself as a prominent figure at the renowned club The Howff.

As a highly influential venue for traditional music—where fellow artists included Hamish Imlach, Bert Jansch, Billy Connolly, among others—Archie Fisher's performances were among the main attractions at The Howff.

He appeared on the notable compilation ‘Edinburgh Folk Festival vol 2’—essentially an introduction to the Howff scene—recording frequently both with his family and as a soloist.

A steadfast advocate for Scottish traditions, Archie Fisher was invited to lead BBC Radio Scotland's show Travelling Folk. Beginning this role in 1983, he soon became a familiar voice on Scottish radio, ultimately retiring in 2010.

Scottish folk singer Iona Fyfe was one of many who honored his memory: “So sad to hear of the passing of Archie Fisher. A true hero of folk music and an inspiration. Rest easy, Archie. My thoughts are with the family and all who cherished Archie and his music.”

James Keelaghan reflected: “I visited him last June and spent the night at the hacienda near Galashiels. We enjoyed curry, shared stories, drank whisky, and played some songs. In the early afternoon, I took my leave. That was the last time I saw him. But it won’t be the last time we’re together. Tonight, I will sing Dark-eyed Molly, The Final Trawl, Bill Hosie, and Witch of the Westmerland, and we will reunite in spirit. If we continue to sing his songs, he will never fade away.”
