Dance-pop veteran Romy has made her comeback with ‘Love Who You Love’, an emotive new song that serves as both a sonic and thematic complement to her praised 2023 solo album ‘Mid Air’. Co-produced by Romy, BloodPop, and bandmate Jamie xx, the track was initially developed five years ago, in 2020. Characterizing ‘Love Who You Love’ as “a proudly queer love song,” she emphasized the importance of recognizing that “the world remains a challenging place for many of us in the LGBTQ+ community to express our love openly.” She further explained: “In response to that, I wanted to create a song that not only celebrates and uplifts love but also advocates for change. The history of resilience and solidarity in the face of immense challenges within the community is incredibly powerful. On a personal level, finding friends, family, and mentors—through queer clubbing—has made me feel less alone and more courageous in many areas of life. These experiences and the people I’ve encountered continue to inspire the music I create, and this song aims to be a love letter of visibility and pride. No one can take away the love you feel—it belongs to you.” Excitingly, Romy has also recently revealed that she has returned to the studio with Jamie xx and Oliver Sim, as the trio gears up to create new music as The xx. Stay tuned for more updates on that… and in the meantime, check out the video for ‘Love Who You Love’ below.
