"The EP represents our effort to process the current condition of Britain, using a cartoonish perspective."
Newcastle group Roses In December (previously known as Crux) is back with their new EP, ‘Divided and Conquered.’
While the lead single ‘Inferno’ expresses outrage at a chaotic world, the accompanying EP ‘Divided and Conquered’ critiques the systems that allow it to burn. Bursting with intricate riffs, aggressive distortion, and strong vocals, this collection emphasizes the band’s anti-establishment stance.
This 5-track EP is marked by provocative commentary and socio-political critiques, while also embracing a spontaneity that borders on the absurd, showcasing a band fully in control of their craft.
Recorded at Blank Studios in Newcastle under the guidance of Sam Grant (Pigs x7), ‘Battleship Boomer’ offers a satirical take on migration policy through a warped board game, while ‘In The Channel of a Hate Crime’ erupts into chaos. Additionally, ‘Sharks’ masks tragedy within a lively, ocean-inspired anthem.
The visual aspect is equally striking. Viz Comics cartoonist Lee Healey designed artwork featuring a wilting red rose, playfully referencing the Labour Party's diminished symbolism and Newcastle’s black-and-white legacy.
“The country feels ridiculous… so we chose to sound ridiculous. You can either weep or mock it. We're doing both,” Roses In December states.
Along with the EP launch, the band has released a short film. Check it out below.
