David Gilmour has raised a toast to Pink Floyd’s success on the charts, as the progressive rock band has achieved an improbable new milestone.
The band's iconic album 'Wish You Were Here' stands as one of their finest achievements, combining grand songwriting with exquisite musicality. Upon its release in 1975, Pink Floyd's masterpiece did not debut at No. 1 on the charts, instead taking its time to attain legendary status.
Re-released for its 50th anniversary in an exquisite new edition, 'Wish You Were Here' has now reached the top of the charts.
Guitarist David Gilmour expressed his joy on social media, celebrating the success of the re-released album:
Cheers to the fantastic news that Wish You Were Here is the UK’s Christmas Number 1 album.
Interestingly, this chart achievement means that Pink Floyd has set a new record, becoming the artist with the greatest time span between their first and last Number One albums, an impressive 2,620 weeks, or over 50 years.
In our 9/10 review, CLASH writer Lee Campbell remarked about the new reissue:
This anniversary edition not only honors a classic but also recontextualizes it, demonstrating that even well-known masterpieces can uncover new facets when treated with the necessary care and ambition. The flames continue to burn.
