Soul and R&B songwriter Don Bryant has passed away.
The death of the Memphis-born artist was confirmed in an official statement moments ago; he was 83 years old, and no details regarding the cause of death have been provided.
The statement reads:
We would like to inform all of Don Bryant's friends and fans worldwide that he passed away this morning at the age of 83. Don cherished sharing his music and songs with you all, and he found immense joy in performing and recording new material. He was deeply grateful to everyone who participated in his musical journey and supported him throughout.
Don Bryant first gained recognition as a teenage songwriter, crafting hits for The 5 Royales. He became a significant figure in the evolving Southern soul sound while affiliated with Hi Records, writing over 150 songs for the label.
He married singer Ann Peebles, and together they collaborated on her hit "I Can’t Stand The Rain."
In the late 70s, Don Bryant’s religious beliefs became prominent, leading him to withdraw from secular music.
After the turn of the Millennium, the Fat Possum label encouraged Don Bryant to return to the studio, resulting in the release of two highly acclaimed records with an entirely new band.
Don Bryant performed with The Bo-Keys on stage at Cosmopolite on September 8, 2017. The lineup included Don Bryant (vocals), Joe Restivo (guitar), Scott Bomar (bass guitar), Dave Mason (drums), Archie Turner (organ), Kirk Smothers (tenor saxophone), and Marc Franklin (trumpet).
