Joy Crookes and Kano Shine Light on Romantic Disconnection in ‘Mathematics’

      A remarkable collaboration...

Joy Crookes and Kano come together for their new single ‘Mathematics’.

The UK artist is stepping into a new phase, beginning with the bold release of ‘Pass The Salt’ (featuring Vince Staples) late last year.

Expanding beyond her captivating debut album ‘Skin’, Joy Crookes has just unveiled a fresh collaboration.

Now available, ‘Mathematics’ explores the disconnect between two lovers who fail to understand each other’s perspectives – it captures a sense of emotional and linguistic misalignment.

True to Joy's style, the song is crafted with meticulous attention – her heartfelt vocals shine, while Kano makes a rare guest appearance, collaborating with a contemporary British talent.

      Joy Crookes remarks…

‘Mathematics’ was inspired by my experience dating a French man who thought our situation was complicated when it was simply a matter of us falling in love, which he then tried to undermine by suggesting we be just friends. As I become more familiar with this song and perform it, I realize it's somewhat an angry reflection on how easily I fall in love and the frustration of unreciprocated feelings. It’s wonderful when a song serves as a remedy for various challenges life throws our way.

Kano listened to the track with Blue May and me, and then recorded his verse for ‘Mathematics’ secretly after I initially asked him to contribute to a different song. He felt inspired by ‘Mathematics’ and came into the studio without us, sending over his verse. It was incredibly touching to witness his willingness to contribute, almost like a gift to this project. Thank you, Kano; it’s truly special to hear your take on love.

      Listen now.

Joy Crookes will perform an intimate concert at Islington Assembly Hall in London on February 18th to support War Child and BRITs week, with tickets selling out in under a minute.
