It’s now officially 2025, and we're making a grand return! This month, we’re thrilled to feature the remarkable artist Self Esteem on the cover of our first issue of the year as she prepares to unveil her impactful third album, ‘A Complicated Woman’. This release comes three and a half years after her Mercury Prize-shortlisted sensation ‘Prioritise Pleasure’, alongside her experience in London’s West End with Cabaret. Rebecca is getting ready to introduce another honest and intricate chapter with what may be her most striking record to date. “It was this odd exchange of desire being swapped out for reality, but I found myself more miserable than ever,” she reveals in our cover interview, reflecting on the emotions tied to receiving such life-changing recognition. “I just couldn’t think. I hated doing it. A major opportunity would arise, and I’d think, ‘NO!’ I really didn’t want to be seen anymore; it was such a bizarre feeling. So as I unraveled all that – it’s pretty simple, but I was like, well, why do I do all of this in the first place?”
And that’s only one of the exciting features we have lined up for you this month! In our February 2025 issue, we venture into space for the launch of Antony Szmierek’s outstanding debut; explore the haunting memories that shaped Heartworms’ first full-length album; and join Nao as she celebrates happiness in her stunning fourth album, ‘Jupiter’. We also engage in a discussion about toxic positivity and current political issues with the Manic Street Preachers for our latest In Deep feature; immerse ourselves in the captivating sounds of Squid’s new LP; and catch up with the Irish band The Murder Capital regarding their thought-provoking third album, ‘Blindness’. In our new music-focused Neu section, breakout star and Saddest Factory musician jasmine.4.t shares her thoughts on the importance of community and chosen family, and we introduce the “lightly seasoned” supergroup The NONE to discuss their new artistic direction. Plus, we delve into the eagerly awaited third album from Black Country, New Road, and celebrate this year’s Welsh Language Music Day with some of the best from Wales. As for new releases, the year has certainly kicked off with energy; our review section is brimming with insights on the latest records from Sam Fender, FKA twigs, Biig Piig, and others, while our live segment looks back on highlights from the beloved Dutch festival, Eurosonic Noorderslag (ESNS).
